Monpbay, JULY 15 | A PRINCELY WELCOME TO THE PREMIER. Sir Richard McBride, Premier of British Columbia, arrives today on his first visit to Prince Rupert since he was honored with knighthood by the King. There are people who practice the pronunciation of “Sir Richard’’ continually in conversation with their friends, seemingly trying to find the most impressive way of mouthing the “Sir,” and there are others more apt to remember the premier than the knight. These others are alike in Liberal or Conservative ranks, Opposed in politics, they have nevertheless a common aim and a great one. They are men due honor to the Premier of the Province, which is their pride for the eredit of Prince Rupert, their city. Because there is a predominance of such men in Prince Rupert, Prince Rupert's welcome to Premier Sir Richard McBride today princely one in which the whole community willingly shares. is a PORCHER ISLAND’S LITTLE PRESENT. Once when Victoria was queen there was 4 greai open air reception given in her honor, at which she received from the tiny daughter of an earl a bouquet of exotics from the noble jord’s conservatories. Later, as the royal carriage was being driven homeward, it is said that a little village girl, daughter of a market gardener, managed to attract the gracious Queen's attention with a handful of cottage garden flowers. Today, while Prince Rupert does all honor to the Premier, Porcher Island shyly presents him with a basket of its own grown strawberries, dew wet, and with the delicate flavor of ithe northern garden. Sir Richard is not royal, and some may think there is no parallel between Premier's attention and Queen's. Yet Premier MeBride represents the government at Victoria, the cily named after the great Queen, and the Premier's Victoria, in the provincial sense, ean do much for Porcher Island, coming market garden district of Prince Rupert. | NOTES AND COMMENT. Fighting Prejudice.—!! is the grand mission of the Libera! party to fight against prejudice; and not even a careless word should be said to obscure that magnificent purpose.—Toronto Star. * * * ad * * Hard on Boat Owners.—Work on the dry dock piling, ete., proceeds apace. Everybody in Prince Rupert wents ii to pro- ceed, but is it sfrictly necessary for the contractor doing the work to lay his booms of piles right across the mouth of Hays Greek so that private boats can get neither out nor in? The creek will be shut up for good and all against boats soon enough in all conscience. Might not the boat owners of thai district be allowed the convenience of it for this last season al least? oe * 7 - * ” Fine Phrase Once, but Overworked.—A Toronto visitor to Regina is reported as saying that the cyclone there was “just like hell let loose.’ It is a pity Canadians are copying the absurd American habit of extravagant profanity. In this case the phrase is an absurdity. The cyclone brought with it a great storm of rain, something that “the pit’ is supposed to be distinctly short of.—Toronto Globe.
