nk Sig ty wei Te Os ao me SEE vane a OTE Ie EEKLY | . By REV. GEORGE T, PATTISON S ERMON ve Rector of Sts Andrew’s: Anglican Cathedral os THE DILEMMA: OF SUFFERING" . May | be’ quite frank. | really haven't a ‘complete answer to this riddle of the ages, but | have gathered together afew. thoughts. First there are those like ‘Job's friends who believe suffering ‘is a direct result of sin, and be- cause there Is enough truth in this false belief it is kept alive today in spite of the fact that devout Christians suffer too, Some accept or blame fate for their sufferings. During the war. one: would .- hear a -soldier say that “a- certain: shell had- his name upon it” and if it was his time he would’ die. Predestina- tion is a sort of fatalism, that, God determines: everything: in advance, which would mean that Judas was no more to blame for betraying Christ than Paul. Others deny the reality of suf- fering. - Why do we suffer? has given us a-power.of. choice. Some misuse’ it,. make: wrong choices and suffer as a result. This does. not. mean,: ‘howeve Y, that everyone who: ‘suffers has made a wrong choice. : Some suffer: because:: they are. bad, others * because. they. are good, .To. be..loyal to.an_ ideal, to’ follow in the: footsteps ofthe Master entails suffering. We:can expect it. This does. not. mean born of experience which may help us to partially understand the true purpose of suffering. | but rather accepting ‘the fact that we live in’a world in which we cannot. avoid: struggle - and suffering and pain... 3 The next step is to accept. ‘it without. seeking self-pity:.or be- coming resentful and bitter, Zt might be a test of our: faith or an opportunity to prove.to our- selves and -to others that God, through Christ, can’ meet ‘all our needs. He promised. not to tempt : us St. Paul has a. word of en- couragement for all who suffer for’ righteousness’ sake: “To work together for good.” ‘trust God, our suffering will be God’ for ite “O joy that seekest’ me. through ~ pain’ oo. I cannot: close my. heart to o.. thee; oo. © I trace the - rainbow through othe rain, cout. : And feel: the promise is not vain ‘That | morn shall tearless be.
