Laivian famed pianist
hint concert artist

Herman Godes, a brilliant
young pianist from
Latvia who made his professional debut as a concert
Pianist at the age of 13 in Riga,.will appear in the
Civic Centre Tuesday night as the third guest artist

in the 1959-60 series of the» Prince Rupert Concert
Society.

Since first appearing in North
Ainerica during the 1951-52 sea-
son, Godes has won the praises
of the America critics for his
delicate and sensitive playing.

Receiving his first’ musical in-
struction from his mother, a
prominent music teacher in his
birthplace, Riga, Latvia, he
graduated from the Latvian

 

Robert Cadesus who wrote: “Her-
man Godes is one of the most
gifted young pianists I have had.
the opportunity to hear This
artist possesses a very fine :tech-
nique and musicality of high

standing. He is a poet at the
piano.”

PRISONER OF WAR’

His brilliant career on. the
European stage was cut short
by the outbreak of Second
World War when as a soldier in
the Latvian Army he was cap-
tured by the Germans and spent
four years In a Nazi concen- |:
tration camp,

Choosing to remain a displac-
ed. person rather than return
to his. Russian occupied home-
land, Godes settled in West
Germany and immediately re-
sumed his concert career. In
1950 he-came to the United
States through the offices of the
; International Refugee Organi-
_ zation bearing a letter from the

He has ‘now been recognized
for. his exceptionally gifted

_ technique in Amer%&a having
appeared in nine heavily booked
concert: tours across the United

States and Canada and _five
highly ‘successful New § York
Town Hall recitals.
