Christehureh, N. Z., Dee. 20,— The sailing of the Terra Nova from Christchurch to pick up the party of Captain Scott is a sign of the end in its third year of the Scott expedition to the Antarctic. It is likely the vessel will bring Scott back to civilization in March. The ship arrived in Akaroa, N. Z., on April 1, 1944, with the last news of Scott. It was then learned that on January 3, 1912, Captain Scott, with a party of four men, was 150 miles from the pole and was advancing hope- fully for his goal although he was far behind in his schedule of march and had been beaten by some weeks by Captain Armund- sen. Captain Scott sent back by Lieutenant Evans this laconic message: “T am remaining in the Ant- arctic another winter in order to continue and complete my work.” Council Visite Work. Yesterday the members of the City Council paid another of their historic visits to Shawatlans Passage in order to be present at the completion of the work of laying the line of pipe across the channel in connection with the city's waterworks system that is to be. The work, which has been progressing very satisfac- torily during the last few weeks, has been advanced to a very ap- preciable extent by the comple- tion of this diffieult part of the undertaking. The pipe is joined by specially constructed joints, so as to allow for slightly bend- ing the pipe without breaking the joints. All dolls and toys carried over from last season going at half price.
