MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN ARE SLAIN AND CITY IS DESOLATED TOWN OF SAN MARCIAL, IN | IN MEXICO, 1S WIPED OUT BY IN- DIANS—INHABGITANTS MADE A PLUCKY DEFENCE, BUT COULD NOT HOLD OUT AGAINST NATIVES. (Special to Daily News.) Douglas, Ariz., Dee .24.—The town of San Marcial, fifty south of Hermosillo, Sonora, | has been completely wiped oul by Yaqui Indians, according to be- lated despatches received here. The population of the town was miles in 1,000. Few are said to have escaped. Later messages from Hermo- sillo, the capital.of Sonora, said that the fall of the town has been semi-officially confirmed, and that the first reports of the mas- sacre were not exaggerated. ’ According to the earlier des- patches, the Indians, five hun- dred strong, besieged the village Wednesday night. The inhabit- ants resisted until yesterday morning, when their ammunition was exhausted, The Yaquis paid no heed to white flags that were displayed and rushed along the streets butchering and pillag- ing. No mention was made in the despatches of the American resi- dents. The American quarter lay in the hills just outside the town proper, and hopes are high here that all Americans escaped. The attacking Indians are be- lieved to be part of a regiiment organized and armed by the Fed- eral government during one of jhad attacked so large a the have the recent revolutions, They looted several villages in last year, but never before town as San Marcial. San Marcial was the centre of the coal mining industry of So- nora. Much American capital is invested in that district.
