Our early start was to allow a turn around the herring pond, with lines overboard, just on the off chance. Apparently the fish had already had their breakfast, because we didn’t get a nibble. Mr. and Mrs. Ballinger and Wally started look- ing for abalone immediately. I was much slower. In a world that was gray and dark green with an occasional spit of rain the galaxy of colors along the rocks becoming uncov- ered was breathtaking. Purple,: deep red, pale pink, orange and all the intermediate colors. Sea urchins as large as mellons, cov- ered with spikes, rock oysters with their red mouths gaping. Deep blue purple starfish flank- ed by red and orange ones. The pink rocks described by abalone hunters were real with the pink growth extending over clinging starfish. The Jong green fronds of the seaweed are a protective cover- ing for the abalone. Pushing the weed aside and trying to stand up at the same time is some- what like tight rope walking. It wasn’t long before Mrs. Ballinger and I found we were down nearly as much as we were up with the inevitable consequence, wet trousers. Sometimes the abalone fall off in the hand, other times the screw driver is needed to pry them off the rock. A short walk along the beach trail brought us to the home of Edward Hudson, old time resi- ldent of Prince Rupert, who spends part of his time in Prince Rupert and part at Hunt’s Inlet. He said he first came to Rupert in 1907, Shortly after 3 p.m. we were out in Chatham Sound again in what was térmed a “very dirty slop”. Our speed was greatly reduced as we “jogged” it across. Conway Twitty, a young 23-year-old artist, wrote “It’s Only Make Believe”:and recorded it for MGM a year ago and from the record salés alone he expects to clear $400,000. On a new - LP “Conway Twitty Sings,” more than half of the tunes have been co-authored by Twitty. His style is much li: ‘Elvis ‘Presley. The record: “Conway Twitty Sings,” MGM © 3744. | POPULAR At one time you could rely on a recording artist making all their records for one company all of their performing days. Not so today. The artists are continually hopping from one label to the other and confusing record dealers. Rose-~ mary Clooney up to some months ago was always associated with the Columbia Company, She has made two recordings lately for two different labels. She recorded “Fancy Meeting You Here” with Bing Crosby for RCA Victor and her. latest venture is a new disc with the Buddy Cole trio for Coral. The latter LP is called “Swing Around Rosie,” (Coral 57266) and she is at her best with 12 tunes. , Guy Lombardo has come up with a new long play to add to his already bulging catalogue. The latest is “Lombardo Goes Latin)” (Capitol T 1191), a collection of tunes from north and JAZZ Famous -jazz pianist Erroll Garner presents another ad- dition of his repertoire with “Erroll Garner Encores in Hi-Fi” -on Columbia CL 1141; Listening to Garner one can hardly believe that he doesn’t read a note of music and the Columbia make a perfect master record the first take. Arrangements I particularly enjoyed were “Moonglow,” ‘“Robbin’s Nest” and “Groovy-Day.” - RE-ISSUES Of particular interest to lovers of early “swing” will be this recent release on London by the Quintet of the Hot Club of France. The’ recordings, “Swing from Paris,” London LL 1344, are a little disappointing sound-wise, but to hear that great guitarist Django Reinhardt and "jazz violinist Stephane Grapelly swinging out is a treat. This type of jazz is quite unique as it doesn’t conform to any particular style except possibly’ French. swing of the 30's. Some famous old numbers by this group included on the LP are “Sweet Georgia Brown,” “Improvisation” and “Djangolgy.” , : of f + CLASSICAL The Mozart, Quintet in E- Flat Major and the Lennox Berkeley, Trio for Violin, Horn and Piano should be of con- siderable interest to admirers of the late Dennis Brain, the great English French horn virtuoso. Mr. Brain was killed a few years ago when his sports car overturned when he was re- turning from the Edinburgh Festival. Mr. Brain, in his late 20s, was considered the world’s greatest French horn player. The two works are a fine example of Dennis Brain’s great musicianship.
