Applicant. THE DAILY NEWS GREAT BRITISH HERO Recent Death of Lord Wolseley and Comparison of His Career with Lord Roberts’. The name of Lord Wolseley and Lord Roberts are associated in the minds of the British peo- ple as the two greatest military commanders of their country and generation. Lord Roberts seems to have possessed more of those qualities which win for a eom- mander the personal affection of the soldiers and the people. There is no “V. C.” in the long list of titles which Lord Wol- seley obtained in his long and distinguished career He had no pet name corresponding to “Lit- tle Bobs,’ and the war stories do not record s0 many dashing ex- ploits of hira as his brother in arms. But those personal ex-| periences are often accidental, | and the fame of Lord Roberts as a commander is due to another class of achievement Moreover General Wolseley was severely wounded in one of the earlier ac-| tions of the Crimea War and was} mentioned in despatches. He was then barely of age and this was his seeond campaign. He had en- tered the army at nineteen and the same year earned a medal in Burmah. The carers of Lord Wolseley and Lord Roberts were curiously parallel. Both were born in the army, the sons of distinguished officers. Lord Roberts was one year the elder, and joined an ar- tillery corps one year before the other joined the infantry. Ser- viee in the Crimea gave the youn- ger man the seniority in rank in the early part of their career Wolseley was captain in 1855, Roberts in 1860, but the advance ment of the latter was thence- forward rapid. His “Forty-One Years in In- dia” covers a period in which Lord Wolseley served in Canada, conducted the Ashanti war, car- ried through two or three cam- paigns in Egypt, led the Gordon Relief Expedition, and held im- portant commands at home. Lord Roberts succeeded Lord Wolsel- ey as commander of the forces in Ireland, and as commander- in-chief. The military career of Lord Wolseley closed in 1900, when Lord Roberts was in South Africa ending his last campaign, and had yet before him four years’ service as head of the army. General Wolseley was called to the Lords as Vicount in 1885 af- ter his service in Egypt. Lord Roberts was made Baron in 1892 and Viscount and Earl in 1901 after South Africa. Both these eminent soldiers were writers. Lord Wolseley published a text book for field service, which went through many editions. He found time in the busy part of his car- eer to write the military history of two great soldiers, Marlbor- ough and Napoleon. But his chief literary work, like that of Lord Roberts, is his own reminiscenses called “The Story of My Life,” written dur- ing the first years of his retire- ment, This is a modest person- al record but from the nature of the ease it is almost a military history of Great Britain for the period that it covers. While he has not in recent years been si- lent in the House of Lords or elsewhere on matters relating to national defence, Lord Wolseley has been far less aggressive than Lord Roberts, who is a frequent and powerful! public speaker Lord Wolseley’s military career in Canada, which included ser- vice in the Fenian Rebellion and in the first Rei! trouble, ade him familiar with this country and its military problems. When he léd his force to Fort Garry he was not allowed to go by the Un- lited States, and so had to use the waterways and portages between Lake Superior and the Red River. In consequence of this experi- ence he accepted the services of the Canadian voyageurs on his Nile expedition several years afterward, GRAND TRUNK PACIFIC Agitation for Canadian Board Will Come Up at London Meeting. London, March 27.—-The Grand Trunk Pacific Railway meeting will be held April 10, The agita- tion for the establishment of a Canadian board has received more attention in certain news- papers than the circumstances warrant.
