Stine uperr Daily Weetys Lew, Thursday, June 7, 1962 — CIAU starts campaign - to boost college sport By JACK SULLIVAN Canadian Press Sports Editor The Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union this week embarked on a campaign to promote college sport‘on a country-wide basis. Approved was a plan to stage intercollegiate competition including hockey, ; basketball and football. - The next step probably would be to stage track and _ field, swimming and other sports. This is something that is long overdue and it could ultimately mean that the colleges would provide athletes for Olympic, British Empire and Pan-Ameri- can Games, and other interna- tional sports festivals. And it is, something that the 30 - member government - appointed national advisory council on fitness and amateur sport should help. The colleges will need money to finance their projects and they’ve already indicated they will go to the fitness couneil for support. It couldn't have come at a better time. Right now, they’ll throw in a bunch of lacrosse players, wrest- lers, fencers, cyclists and so on onto the grandstand turf. At various other spots over the sprawling 350-acre CNE grounds, youngsters will run, square dance, | play handball and do all sorts of calisthenics, But more than 300,000 paying customers are expected to visit the CNE that day and the crush of spectators alone is enough to create a mob scene. The idea of: the rally — to focus attention ‘on fitness—could be lost. | ' The best plan, possibly, is to, stage a regimented plan of calis- | KRAFT SALAD BOWL SALAD DRE DOLE’S PINEAPPLE CHEF — BOY-R-DEE .
