DAILY EDITION LABOR OUTLOOK GOOD FOR THIS SUMMER. Good news can be found in the statement of the general manager of the Grand Trunk Pacific, published in this issue, that the building of the com- pany’s great hotel at Prince Rupert is to be started soon. As this means the expenditure of about two million dollars it will necessarily give regular employment for a large num- ber of men until the fall of next year, when the first through train may be expected to reach this city. In prepara- tion for that event, too, there will be the building of a per- manent railway station and of the great warehouses that a great transcontinental and trans-Pacific business will ne- cessitate. The vast amount of work to be accomplished by the railway will therefore add materially to the pay roll and to our population. For this ad- ditional population more homes will have to be built, so there is sure to be great activity in the building trades from now on. There is now and has al- ways been a scarcity of dwell- ings for men of moderate means, and as this inadequacy becomes more and more ap- parent no doubt many of the large outside capitalists who have invested here will grasp the opportunity of making their properties pay good rentals. All of which is the new busi- ness in sight, and is in addition to the great dry dock buildings, the construction of the city’s hydro-electric plant, the $100,- 000 ridge to Section Two, the boulevard around Kaien Island and many city improvements that have yet to be: projected but will doubtless come with a rush now. For it must be re- membered. that not only the railway but the city itself has to prepare for the great rush of business the transconti- nental railway will immediately produce. Also it should be the proud aim and ambition of our citizens to make of Prince Ru- pert the city beautiful planned by the celebrated landscape ex- pert who platted it, so that a deep impression may be made eae Monday, April 7, 1913 upon the thousands of visitors the first train will bring. This would give to the city a world- wide advertisement of inestim- able value. With the increase of the forces employed by the city there will also be many men required in the erection of in- dustrial plants. We have al- ready one of the largest cold storage plants in the world, two similar ones are projected for this summer and the fish- ing industry, which has already made so promising a start, bound to be rapidly expanded to the limit. In quick succes- sion as soon as they start there will be furniture and other wood works, cotton and woollen mills, silk factories and so on, manufacturers be- ing quick to grasp the advan- tages and saving to be secured by a site which commands both the prairie and Orienta) markets. In this connection Alderman Leek made an excellent sug- gestion at the special meeting of the city council held on Sat- urday afternoon. He pointed out that the city should be able to offer manufacturers induce- ments to come here, and that one of the best of such induce- ments was the offer of cheap power. There is a contest now on between the city and the Prince Rupert Hydro-Electric Company, the latter offering what it declares to be unusually cheap rates for the supply of power and the former fighting to obtain still better terms for the city. Within the next two months this matter will be satisfactorily settled and upon its settlement applications for factory sites in and around the city will rapidly follow as a natural consequence. This is but a shadowy idea of the great labor and business activity soon to start up, to which everyone who* reads it may have something to add from personal knowledge or by way of suggestion, but there is sufficient substance in the shadow for us all to heartily chant the old ditty: “There's a good time coming, boys,” with the cheerful feeling that we have not long to wait for it. is | “FROM HOME TO HOME.” HOTEL ELYSIUM Sid.
