PO-42-4A CO-OP UNION PRESIDENT SAYS: - The co-operative movement in Prince Rupert is the most com- pact and unique in Canada, ac- cording to ltalph Staples, presi- dent of the Co-op Union of Can- ada, who spoke at a public meet- ing held Friday al the Annunci- ation Hall by the Prince Rupert Fishermen's Co-operutive Associ- ation, | Mr. Staples said that nowhere in Canada is the program so closely intepratcd as is that of the three lurge organizations of tne PRFCA, the Producer’s Divi- sion, the Consumer's Division and the Credit Union. Mr. Stap- les also said that those who live in the city did not realize fact, but the fish packing plant et Fairview was the largest of its kind in Canada. Mr. Stiuples stated that he and Rev. Norman MacKenzie were touring the two western provin- ces to hold mectings and ac- quaint people with the “co-oper- atlives everywhere” movement which the Co-Op Union had in mind. He suid this program would give people the opportun- iv lo help others, and a fund | weuld he started for this effort i Shortly, Ie, FP) Harding, manager-sec- retary of the PRECA, explained the ; that this program would help the underprivileged nations. Mr.! Harding said that he himself. had seen the farmers of India! ‘heiped whem he was there in! 1956, and this propram would | give these hungry people a: Chanee to help themselves. i Mr. Harding, who is vice-pre- | sident of the Co-op Union of. Canada then introduced the; third executive member of the Union, Breen Melvin of Regina. | Mr. Melvin said (hat this was: thi: first time that the three ex- ecutive members of the Union had ever met in Prince Rupert. | Ho recalled that he had been! here eight yeurs ago, and also during the Second World War, when he was a worker for the Youny Men's Christian Associa- thon. He also spent from 1954 to 1960 in India in the same capacity and had just recently returned from western Nigeria, where he had spent a year on the Colombo plan under the United Nations. Mr. MacKenzie said that a re- volution was sweeping the world _. that the hungry of the east demanded an equal place with the west. “The pendulum of ‘history is sweeping back”, Mr. MacKenzie declared. “India and West Africa are moving on and the white races are stepping back. They want to be accepted ag equals.” The three points which the countries were rebelling against were hunger, the feudal system and the white man’s dominance, Mr. MacKenzie stated. He illus- trated his address with actual experiences he had had, and which pointed out how hunger could change a man’s reasoning and cutlook, “It is all very good to send oul wheat, food, clothes and me- dicine to these restless nations,” he said, “but it is far better to send out to them funds and workers who would develop their land, skills and business and so help them to help themselves.” Before the meeting, a film en- titled “Catalyst” was shown. It depicted how a United Nations worker had gone to the island of lHaiti and had shown the pea- ‘sants there, after some opposi- ‘tiun and set-backs, how to catch store rain water, how to plant and fertilize gardens and how to build roads to take their produce to market.
