By AGNES H. NEAVE rr reevuvvy.®. por PP Per FRANCOIS LAKE—The Lakes District Music Festival was held in Burns Lake on Thursday, Fri- day and Saturday in the Imma- culate Hall. I would like to have been able to go in especially for the last night’s judging, but did manage to go in on Thursday morning when our nine-year-old granddaughter Marie sang “Croona,” a solo for girls under 10 years. Although she only was able to take three lessons to learn to sing this song she did quite well for she won the certi- ficate and was a proud little girl to be able to take it home to show her mother who was not able to go in and hear her with the new baby to care for. There were two piane con- testants who came from Prince Rupert, Judy Fossum and Win- fried Rompf. I think that they took everything for I hear that their performances were SuUu- perb. I heard one lady after church on Sunday morning say that she would willingly have paid a dolar and gone in the 15 miles to hear them play. +} % + Our domestic power rates have gone down considerably this month and I wonder if they have dropped any in Prince Rupert although we did hear that the rural rates were likely to go down more than the town ones. Qur minimum charge per month is six dollars plus tax and we were getting 67 kwh for this, but with the new rate we get 214 kwh. They are staying in our ferry cottage until school is over for the summer holidays. The chil- dren are looking forward to go- ing to a country school for a change. * + On’ Wednesday morning when Bob Jeffrey was driving to Burns Lake to work he disturbed a moose and her yearling calf as they were strolling on the high- way. The cow jumped the wire fence easily beside the road, but the calf became entangled and one hind leg was caught up. Bob drove to the Deeder ranch which was close and Earl came with him and brought a pair of pliers. The two men managed to hold the calf and cut the wire and push the calf over the fence to the same side the cow was on. She was walking back and forth in an extremely bad frame of mind about 20 feet away so the men had to keep a wary eye on her as they worked with the calf which weighed about 500 pounds. The calf didn't show ap- preciation either but perhaps the pair felt better about it all later on when they were safe in the trees. Cy + Bill and Beulah Corner and the boys spent the holidays in Van- couver returning on Sunday aft- ernooéh-to call for their colossal German police dog Prince who had stayed in our kennels, He is a beautifully behaved dog and cettled down right away. Bill is engineer on the ferry and thinks that they will try and push it throurh the rotting ice in a few days. The folks across the lake are getting tired of having to drive 100 miles round the lake to get here as they have another 15 to Burns Lake, On Saturday a lad of 15, Stanley Peterson, at Southbank was felling — trees alone when one must have caught him as it fell for he was found with a fractured skull, In- sterd of bringing him across the lake on the ferry they had to take bhn all the way round by road, ofe } fe There is an open plece of water near Colleymount where 17 loans have been swimming.
