Pee : Prince Rupett Daily ews Ley i cs 4 Monday, December 24, 1962 ~ ‘In the latest issue of the: “Scotch Cup News” there is much . ado about nothing relating to the proposed amendment to the Do- minion Curling Association’s constitution. , ' ‘This amendment, would auto-— matically, brand any crrier who has won more than $600. worth, of prizes a professioual and would exclude him automatically from the McDonald Brier Competi- tions. > This rule is primarily aimed at the Richardsons from Saskatch- ewan who are riding 2. wave of popularity and are making mo- ney writing books, endorsing sweaters and brooms and even: get paid for appearing in exhi- bitions. “While this ruling does not af- fect anyone in the Prince Ru- pert Curling Club directly,. it could make a difference: in our club in my opinion. : My reason for saying this is. the fact. that we contribute $15C approximately per year to the. B.C. Curling Association which in turn‘is affiliated with the Do- minion . Curling Association. * Now if proposed amendment is passed at the annual. mecting of the D.C.A. pior. to the McDon- ald Brier early next ‘year, we could save this amount of monty by refusing to ‘belong to any or- ganization whose reasons for ex- Cluding the best curlers in Can- ara are as feeble as this. - ; Most of us will agree that the difference ‘between - amateurs ; ‘At the curling rink ' By BOB RUDDE RHAM and professionals in other sports is strictly the thickness of the ‘top of the table over (or: under) which the contract transaction takes place. The only ttue amateurs left in the world today'are the fellows who compete in games With lit- tle hope of. gaining ._prominence in their chosen sports. We play because we love the game. But it is also because, of fellows like ourselves that the better athlete gets his reputation to start-with. The top-notch “amateur’ in other sports either get a scholar- ship in some large university or if he is past this age, he gets some cushy job with a large firm ‘strictly for the publicity. and orestige he may bring to that firm: If .this isn’t professional- ism, it certainly cannot be call- ed amateurism. So why should the D.C.A. put ya prize limit on these curlers who form the Who’s Who of Curling? Surely. the difference between an amateur ‘curler and a professional ‘doesn’t. depend on the result of the finals in the Grand: Aggregate at some Auto- motive’ Bonspiel. ° The Very. , fact, that the most coveted prize in. ‘curling, the McDonald Brier Tankard, is an amateur event in’ a truer sense of, the word than any other amateur sport can claim, should -| be = foundation » enough — to the} curlers’ claim. “There are no professionais amongst us”.
