BRYAN A MEDDLER Universal Peace Too Hard a Nut for Such as He to Crack. (Special to The Daily News.) London, May 1t4,.--The London newspapers of this morning are saying that Secretary of State Bryan should not meddle with universal peace, and that if he does he will find he has a very hard nut to erack, one too hard even for him, The general tone of criticism is one of ridicule Stingy Churchgoers. London, May 10.--The Bishop of London, speaking on ehureh work in Canada, said: “The or dinary English ehurehman for threepence put in the collection plate expeeted a good vicar, good looking curates and a peal of bells.” When he was in Can.- ada he was told the worst givers were those who came out from two the old country, NEW RAILWAYS PROJECTED FOR Ottawa, May 12- Notice is giv- en that application will be made to the Parliament at the next session for an act to incorporate a company under the name of the Atlin Railway Company with power to construct a_ railway commencing at a point on the southern end of Atlin Lake at or near the town of Atlin and fol- lowing a generally southern di- rection to a point on the Taku river, where it intersects the in- ternational boundary, and also Charles P. known mining man, is back in business visits to Vancouver, Seattle and Spokane. He says he found business. condi- tions in Vancouver and Seattle quiet. Money is reported by the Publie Services Corporation at Vancouver as being way up and at Seattle in both professional and mercantile line business is quiet and collections hard to make. Spokane is far more quiet than either of the cities men- tioned. There it looks as if the very active real estate specula- tion of the past few years has gone the limit, and that people must now be content to hold their properties until the normal and productive growth brings back eonditions that will enable them to sell their property at former figures. As a result of the enforced quiet in real estate, Mr. Richard- son finds that there is a marked revival, especially in Spokane, of interest in mining matters and mining development. The suc- cessful development of three or four new large properties, largely backed by Spokane money, has stimulated an interest that bas been lacking in mining enter- prises for years. Mr. Richardson met a great many men, both in town from Lock Builder Says the Panama Canal Cannot Be Fully Opened Before 1918. New York, May 10.—-Meyer Boyer, lock builder, who arrived yesterday from the Canal Zone by the steamer Advance, said he believed the Panama Canal would not be open fully for at least five years, as the locks would not be in proper shape un- til then. He did not doubt that some ships would be sent through this year, but he was sure, he said, that commerce would not be benefited by the opening this year. Much work is yet to be done on the locks, Committed for Trial. MANY MINING INVESTORS ARE EXPECTED HERE THIS SUMMER VISIT OF THE INTERNATIONAL GEOLOGISTS BOUND TO BRING A LARGE NUMBER OF CAPITALISTS INTERESTED IN MINERAL DEVELOPMENT. Spokane and Seattle, making keen enquiries in regard to the out- look in the Northern British Co- lumbia country. The Granby company’s success at Granby Bay has been largely instrumental! in drawing attention to that part of the district, and in regard to the interior in the vieinity of Hazel- ton and beyond the interests of Frank Brown, James Cronin, Mr. Jennings and others have spread the news of the mineral re- scurces. Two engineers from Spokane preceded Mr. Richardson here to expert certain properties Mr. Richardson in handling, and he knows of some ten or twelve who have planned to come te this part of the country this summer to see what can be shown them in the way of mining opportun- ities for investment. Since his return Mr. Richardson has ex- amiged one property for business connections and has other in- vestigations in view. He regards the outlook for. this season in this part of the country as un- usually promising, and not the least factor in this will be the visit of the members of the In- ternational Geographical Con- gress, all of whom are practically mining engineers, who will visit Prince Rupert, Hazelton and Granby Bay.
