QAKQ OA8BT2 &AZ The bidding: West North East South Pass Pass Pass 106 Double Pass 2 te 2NT Pass 3NT Pass Pass Pass Opening lead: King of & A mild indiscretion committed by West during the auction in today’s hand enabled an alert deslarer to uncover a finessing situation which was not readily discernible. The auction does not get our stamp of approval. Counting an extra point for holding all the aces, South’s hand becomes worth 22 points, and should be opened, with two no trump. West’s takeout double is not very sound, despite his original pass, for, when East is unable to open the bidding in third position, there can be little hope to score offensively. Altho West has 12 high card points, his dis- tribution is rather unattractive and the queen of diamonds is of questionable value. East responded to the double by showing his longest suit, clubs, and South made his sec- ON BRIDGE ond questionable decision when he failed to double. While the double in this situation is re- garded as optional, North had enough strength in clubs to leave the double in, and with scund defense a 700 point sting could have been inflicted on the opposition. Against the final contract of three no trump, West opened the king of spades, which was permitted to hold. West contin- ued with the queen and this time declarer played the ace. There were eight top tricks in sight, with a possible ninth available from. the long dia- mond in South’s own hand. The normal procedure is to play three roxnds of diamonds in the hope that the suit is di- vided three-three. From the bid- ding, however, it appeared to declarer that West was short in. diamonds, and he decided to base his play on. this assump- tion. At trick three, a small dia- mond was led from the closed hand and, when West followed with a small card, the nine was played from dummy. East was in with the ten of diamonds and he switched to a heart. South put up the ace and led another diamond. This brought forth the queen from West and the king from North. Declarer now held a tenace over his right hand opponent. The three of diamonds was played from the dummy. Easi followed with the six and de- clarer covered with the eight -which held the trick as West showed out. South cashed the ace of diamonds and quickly ran for cover with his nine tricks.
