Just ON STATION CFPR Two new features will at Gp.m. Beginning tonight, a program of general interest, concerned with problems of northern de- velopment, local history, Indian affairs and folklore will be heard every Thursday. Tonight’s program is the be- ginning of a series of five broad- casts which are called the “Mus: keg Problem’. This problem is one of interest to this locality as it is generally thought that muskeg cannot be used for farm- ing, gardening, pasturing cattle, building. cr for roads or rail- roads. There are over 500,000 square miles of muskeg in Can- ada, and the north cannot be developed until this problem has been faced. Foremost among prominent Canadians who have been giving this subject serious thought is Dr. Norman William Radforth, chairman of the Faculty for Or- ganic and Associated Terrain Studies at McMaster University, chairman of the Biology Depart- ment of the same university, and chairman of the Muskeg Com- mittee of the Associated Com- mittees for Soil and Snow Mechanics. Dr, Radforth came to the city recently and recorded some pro- grams with Jack Martin, man- ager of the Northwest Construc- tion Company and chairman of the sites and ground commission for the proposed golf course here. During the research done by Dr. Radforth and others, it has been learned that muskeg can be used for farming, gardening, «¢ | Pasturing cattle, and building roads and railroads. On tonight’s program, Dr. Radforth and Mr. Martin will discuss the nature of muskeg and the first step in the process of using it prcductively, drain- age.
