The bidding: South West’ North East INT Pass 3NT Pass Pass Pass Opening lead: Five of 9 The declarer used his eyes instead of his head in map- ping out his line of play in to- day’s hand. Failure to attack in the right direction proved fatal to his cause. North and South lost no time ‘in getting to three no trump and West opened his fourth best heart. East covered the ten with his king and declarer’s ace won the trick. With six tricks as- sured in spades and hearts, he started development of the dia- monds immediately to build his total to the required number of nine, A diamond was led to the jack and East was in with the ace, On a heart return, South finessed the nine losing to West’s jack and another heart cleared the suit. When the dia- monds failed to break, de- clarer discovered that he was still a trick short, After. run- ning the spades, he Jed a club, but West put up the ace and still had enough hearts left to sink the contract. Declarer’s timing had been faulty. After the first trick pro- duces the ten, king, and ace of . hearts, he has a tenace remain- ing in the queen-nine which is safe from further attack on his left. He should therefore en- deavor to keep his right hand’ opponent out of the lead while he does his preliminary work. He has six sure tricks with ample additional tricks if dia- monds break evenly. If the suit does not respond, however, he will still be a trick short, and if East has the ace of diamonds © a lead thru South’s heart hold- ing may prove fatal. Declarer should begin to work on the clubs first, for this is a suit that he can develop with impunity. It is suggested that he cross to the ace of spades at trick two in order- to play a small club. If East has the ace, he cannot afford to put it up, for by so doing he will estab- lish three tricks in the suit, for South. If declarer succeeds in sneaking thru one cluh, he can afford to switch his attention to the diamonds. ‘When the first club lead ac- tually loses to the ace on his left, South is still in good shape, for West cannot attack the hearts profitably, and declarer has ample time to work on the diamonds. exceed 27 Knots fully loaded, Advertising in The Daily News Brings Results BLONDIE GaonwnanaIhh APWNHNNNHH HH TUESDAY AM. 6:00—News and Voice Reports 6:10—First Call to Breakfast 6:32—Regional Weather 6:40—Fishermen’s Broadcast 7:00—News & Weather 7:07—Second Call to Breakfast Skeena Silver 7:30—News 7:33—Voice Reports 7:39—Short Call to Breakfast 7:45—Think on These Things 7:55—Interlude 8:00—CBC News & Weather 8:10—Bill Good Sports 8:15—-Last Call to Breakfast 8:27—News 8:30—-Preview Commentary 8:35—Max Ferguson Show | 9:00-—-CBC News; Voice Reports Canada Tungsten 9:10—Count Your Blessings 9:15—Archers 9:30—Concert Encores 10:00—Morning Visit 10:10—For Consumers 10:15—University Of The Air 10:45—-Playroom 11:00—Showtime '11:45—Cafe Variety 12:00—-Hoedown P.M. :15—News & Weather :25—-Sports Soundings :30—B.C.
