ANDREW'S SOCIETY Their New Hall in the Kaien island Club Was Very Much Enjoyed. given by have al- the the entertainments Andrew's Society been classed among enjoyable of functions, members being charming entertainers, but last night's af- fair was the best of them all be- cause they had a fitting place to give “it in. The former gym of the Kaien Island Club makes a splendid hall for dancing. Last night it was beautifully decor- ated for the opening occasion and the floor was perfect. The entertainment opened with a whist drive, in which the prizes were won by Miss Mackenzie and Mr. Garton. Following this came the dainty supper and then danc- ing to the music of Gray’s or- chestra. From ninety tg one hundred couples participated, the opening march starting a little before 11 and the last strathspey being reeled off a little after 2 this morning. It was a most en- joyable affair throughout and the new quarters of the society were much admired. M. Griffith John Davis, the man from Kokomo, is a great laugh raiser. John Davis, a henpecked husband, is the victim of the constant suspicious of his wife. Nevertheless, when he gets to Chi- eago he decides to see a thing or two. He is promptly ensnared by a pretty actress who tries to make him feel younger by reducing the size of his pocketbook. As an offset to the man from Kokomo and his suspicious wife, there is another pair, Mr. Stone, a jealous husband, and his wife. A little color is imparted to the whole play by Daniel Webster White and it is further decor- ated by Buttons. The eternal love interest is, of course, sup- plied in full measure. The Griffith Stock Company will present “The Man From Kokomo” for a second time al the West- holme Theatre this evening. To- morrow and Saturday evening the play will be: “Bought and Paid For.” ARTISTS WILL PAINT CRESTS OF HAIDAS Miss Carr of Victoria Is in the Islands at Present for That Purpose. There arrived from Victoria on Tuesday, at Skidegate, Miss Carr, a noted lecturer and artist, who wil! journey this month to the west coast of the Queen Char- lotte Islands, there to transfer to canvas the scenes existing in the days when totem poles were re- splendent in paint, and the In- dian inhabitants all powerful. This lady lectured two months ago in Vancouver, and the exhibition of 200 British Co- lumbia paintings, portraying In- dian life, totem poles and council houses, drew marked attention. Not a small portion of the collee- tion has been secured after travelling thousands of miles, for it is off the beaten path that it is possible to procure the sub- ject matter. She is the elder daughter of the late Duke of Fife and the Princess Royal (Princess Louise), King Edward's eldest daughter On the death of her father, the sixth Earl and the first Duke of Fife, in January last wear, Prin- cess Alexandra succeeded him as Duchess of Fife in her own right, by the special remainder con- tained in letters patent of 1900. She has no brothers, and her only sister Prineess Maud is her heir. She is the owner of some 250,- 000 acres and mistress of the great house of Braemer and Banff, Scotland. Like her moth- er, the young princess has al- ways been of a retiring disposi- tion, and her happiest days have been spent in outdoor sports at Mar Lodge rather than in Lon- don society. At the time of his marriage with Princess Louise in 1889 her father was only an earl, being afterward created first Duke of Fife, while his daughters were raised to the rank of princesses in 1905, thus bringing them within the provisions of the Royal Marriage Act. At the same time King Edward conferred on their mother the tithe of Princess Royal, AFTER TWO | DIVORCES Lady Randolph Churchill Is Quite Cheerful Over Future. London, Aug. 4.—Lady Ran- dolph Churchill, who has re- sumed her old name and _ title since her divorcee from her see ond husband, Mr. George Corn wallis West, is bearing her matri monial troubles bravely and with a fortitude which does nol sur- prise her friends, who, however, are aware she feels deeply the humiliation and the misery of il all. “If a man wants to go, hy all means let him go,” is her motto. There are more amusing stories told of Lady Randolph than of any woman in society and she enjoys recording a joke against more than anything else. herself “The Daily News ” CLASSIFIED ADS.
