Hon. CG. Price Eltison was given
a most enthusiastic reception by
the large gathering. In opening
his address he drew attention to
the many difficulties he had ex-
perienced in reaching Prince Ru-
pert in time for the opening. For
the purpose of gathering infor-

mation concerning the interior
he had come by way*of Edmonton
and Tete Jaune Cache. <As the

difficulties of travel increased he
feared many times he would be
unable to get here in time. Com-
ing down the Fraser the boat
men objected to running at night,
telling him of the chances they
took of landing in Kingdom Come.
“Turn her loose,’ IT said. ‘Prince
Rupert or Kingdom Come-is good
enough for me.’ He had can-
celled nine engagements for
opening other exhibitions in or-
der that he might reach here in
time. He was somewhat afraid
that it would be impossible to
congratulate Prince Rupert on its
first exhibition, but from what he
had already seen o fit he was as-
and the citizens of the
district had every reason to be
proud. From his trip through
the interior he had found the
country immensely rich in re-
sources of all kinds and it is up

lacking. The example set by the
government in spending $500,000

Prince Rupert and that set by the
G. T. P. in building a hotel that

Referring particularly to agri-
culture, Hon. Mr. Ellison’ said
that the products in the interior
astounded him. Coming
through he had seen a_ fourth
crop of alfalfa grown on

products. He had no doubt what-
ever but that before long the
provinee could and would pro-
duce enough for its own con-
sumption.

Addressing the school chiidren,
the speaker endorsed the remarks
of Mayor Pattullo and said that
the residents of the province had
every reason to be proud of the
splendid educational facilities
that were offered. There was no
reason, he said, why among the
large gathering of children be-
fore him there was not even a
future premier of Canada.

In formally opening the fair,
the honorable gentleman said that
it was but the beginning of what
should become one of the best

try through which he had trav-
elled was undoubtedly one of the
best parts of the province from
an agricultural standpoint. He
regretted that he could not re-
main in‘the city longer, on this
occasion but hoped to return at
an early date and make a longer
visit.
Medal Presented.

At the conclusion of the
dress, Mr, MeMullin, the presi-
dent, presemted to Hon. Mr. Elli-
son a neatly engraved medal as
a memento of the occasion. It
was customary, he said, on such
an occasion to present a key, but
as there was no key for the pres-
ent building a medal was sub-
stituted.

children of “God Save the King”
the opening ceremonies were
brought to a close and the doors
were thrown open to the public.

Indian Band Contest.

The first of the contests among
the Indian bands was finished
this morning. It was the station-

a silver medal for each member.
The prize went to Kitkatla. The
other bands participating were
Metlakatla, Kineolith, Greenville
and Aiyansh. Prof. Millon Doug-
las of Seattle is the judge. Other
contests are being held this af-
ternoon.

Best Decorated Tables.
One of the prettiest features of

ing contest held in the balcony
of the Industrial Hall. There
were five entries and Mr. A. H.
Tomlinson, the judge, had a hard
task before coming to his final
decision in awarding the first
prize to Mrs. Perey F. Goden-

berg won second place and Miss
Du Vernet third. Each of the five
tables were very tastefully decor-
ated in flowers and ferns, but
only two attempted to set their
tables for service. Mrs. Goden-
rath had the full complement of
silverware and cut glass for a

party of four people, finishing her
table with red ribbons, red ear-
nations and red candle shades.

Band Contest Tomorrow.

Tomorrow at 11 a. m. sharp
the five Indian bands will com-
pete for the J. S. Gray silver cup
for the best selection, members
of the winning band also each re-
ceiving a silver medal. On Fri-
day morning the bands will join
the trades and labor parade and

will play as they march. The
winning band will receive the
Wark cup and also a handsome
kettle drum, given as a special

prize by Whaley, Royce & Co. of
Toronto.
Water Sports.
The competition for the best
decorated boat this morning was
so keen that the judges were un-

able to decide which of the
contestants was winner. The
prize was therefore divided be-

tween the Poin Sette decorated by
Mrs. A. G, MeLaren and_ the
White Swan by Lionel Crippen.
