DAILY EDITION Monday, Sept. 29, 1913.
LOYALTY OF CARSON
AND MR. BORDEN.
It may be simply a matter of
coincidence but there is cer-

tainly a resemblance in the B ,

loyalty to the Crown of which} for British loyalty until after
Mr. Borden claimed for his Borden had made his unholy
party a monopoly at the last| Compact with the Nationalists

of Quebec, who are as anti-
British as are the men of Ul-
ster today. Then to cover up
this pact, and for fear the
Tories should be charged with
disloyalty because of it, arose
the great campaign cry of loy-
alty to the British Crown.
Borden and Carson would seem
to be political twins.

GORGEOUS PARADE OF

election, and the strain of loy-
alty Sir Edward Carson is. at
present showing in Ulster. Sir
Edward, say our despatches,
was on Saturday last review-
ing the volunteer army of one
hundred thousand Unionists
who are armed to defend Ul-
ster from home rule and to es-
tablish a government of their
own, possibly with Carson as

king.
Herein is disclosed a situa- | @OLD PLATED HEROES.
tion which, to say the least, is Col. Hon. Sam Hughes, the

minister of militia, ought to be
creating some excitement in
Europe with his gold plated
brigade and “splendid staff.”
All that is lacking to complete
the outfit is a brass band, Col.
Hughes’ party consists of:
THE COLONEL.
“His Splendid Staff.”
23 Canadian Militia Officers.
19 Canadian Ladies.
2 Lady Stenographers.
X Servants, Etc.
“God Save the King.”
There should be another

remarkable: a peer of the realm
aiding and abetting the fo-
menting of a rebellion against
the Crown which he has sworn
to serve.

Carson's position is typically
Tory. So long as his party is
in control of the government
he is loyalist and royalist to
the core; but when his party
loses control his loyalty is seen
to be with his prejudices
rather than with the Crown.
His theory of loyalty is that all
peop!e should be loyal to a
government which he and his substantial expense account for
kind control, but that a gov- the auditor general to attend
ernment which he and his kind to when Col. the Hon. Sam
do not control should not Hughes brings his party home.

The tragedy at Kimsquit, the
Indian fishing village on Deane
Channel, where a week ago four
shot dead by an-
other member of the band ina
drunken fury, has again called
attention to the menace of whis-
key among the native tribes, and
to the strong efforts that are be-
ing made by the provincial police
to fight the illicit trade in liquor.
Provincial Constable Barger,
who has been acting as fishing
overseer in the Rivers Inlet dis-
trict this year, and who was one
of the officers called to the scene
of the Kimsquit tragedy, stated
that the police in the Rivers In-
let district this year had been
very active in their search for
liquor around the canneries. The
stuff is usually smuggled in by
the Chinese laborers and hidden
in their quarters and sold, a bot-

ermen,.

“In the Rivers
this season we confiscated 750
bottles of whiskey and emptied
them in the sea,” said Constable
Barber. Five hundred bottles of
the stuff were found hidden in
the Chinese quarters of the Bea-
ver Cannery, the trade in liquor
being extensively carried on by
the Chinese who work in the can-
neries. The liquor was _ not
claimed and all the Chinese de-
nied ownership. Previous to this
year seizures could not be made
unless trafficking could be prov-
ed, but under the recent amend-
ments to the act introduced by
the attorney-general, the provin-
cial officers can now make seiz-
ures and confiscate all liquors
not claimed within 30 days. The
general freedom from _ serious
crime is largely attributable to
the seizures.”
