COAL AT SOUTH POLE
FOUND BY SCOTT PARTY

Indicates That Polar Regions
Once Had Tropical Suns

London, Dee. 30.—Probably

the most interesting of the Scott

Antaretic expedition specimens,
which have just been placed in
the Natural Historm Museum at
South Kensington, are the few
pieces of coal found by Captain
Scott's party in latitude 85 de-

grees, in the middle of the frozen
plateau that stretches from King
Edward's Land way beyond the
South Pole.

The coal was found by Com-
mander Evans among the little
bundle of fossils which Captain
Scott and his three companions
dragged through the blizzard
with their other baggage on that
memorable journey» which eost
them their lives.

The few tiny fragments, under
the light of science, tell a won-
derful story. If it is true, as
these specimens strongly  indi-
cate, that there is coal at the
South Pole, it follows that at
some-remote period there must
have been forests growing in this
frozen, ice-covered land. Stored
up in the little bits of coal is the
heat from a tropical sun which
ages ago shone over the hills and
fertile valleys of King Edward
Land, now a desolate ice waste.

ting up the divisional point at
McBride, 125 miles east of Prince
George,” said a Grand Trunk of-
ficial. “The roundhouse’ has
been completed and sidings laid.
Some work has been done to-
ward providing divisional facili-
ties at Prince George and Smith-
ers, but most of the work at the
divisional points will be left over
until all the steel is laid in order
that ‘materials may be shipped in

British Columbia are McBride,
Prince George, Endaco, Smith-
ers, Pacificand Prince Rupert.

“Supposing the promoter of an

industry came and asked us for
power today?” said a public man

sition on the 16th of January if »
the electors do not accept the
agreement with the Prince Ru-
pert Hydro-Electrie Power Co.?

In that event we could not prom- —
ise an industry power im a time
short of two years. But it the
agreement is accepted we can
promise power on September ist, :
Undoubtedly the coming year will ~
bring us industrial propositions.
We must be in shape to accept
them.

“Under this agreement we can
offer power to industries in any
quantity without having to go to
any expense, and it ean be se-
cured on short notice. At the
end of the agreement period, 20
years the city can if it so desires
shut off the current and the com-
pany has absolutely no claim, no
plant within the city and no
franchise or anything binding on
the city in any way. I consider
it is an agreement such as any
city would be fortunate in se-
curing.

“Personally I feel the people
would make a great mistake in
not supporting the agreement.”
