SAVED WOMAN'S LIFE

Mrs. Cyr Took Laudansum With
Intention of Ending

Her Life

Yesterday Mrs. J. Cyr was in
the police station telling her
her family troubles to the offi-
eials. They gave her sympathy
and good advice, but in the after-
noon she grew despondent and
attempted suicide. She took a
big dose of laudanum—so much

  

 

that the effect was retroactive
and she did not die.

The unfortunate woman was
found by a neighbor in a room on
Second avenue and medical at-
tendance was called. She was
removed to the hospital where
she was brought out of the ef-
fects of the drug. She will be
able to leave the hospital to-
night.

Mrs. Cyr made a similar at-
tempt about a year ago.

Frank Clapp has had plans out
for a three-storey concrete
building to be used for an hotel
which he contemplated erecting
on Third avenue near The Daily
News off The. structure was
neat and substantial, but con-
tained only thirty-five bedrooms.
As a resull of the decision of the
city council to compel the new
licensed hotels to have sixty bed-
rooms, Mr. Clapp says he will
change his plans and substitute
a frame building with sixty bed-
rooms Mr. Clapp admits that
such a building would add to the
fire hazard of the business sec-
tion, but it is the only kind of
structure that can be put up un-
der present conditions to meet
the requirements of the city

Government Sends Literature

 

A substantial shipment of gov-
ernment literature the shape
of 2,600 folders on British Co-
lumbia has been received by the
board of trade, together with
booklets covering the Peace river
and recording division and the
south fork of the Fraser river.
Many enquiries are being made
for pre-emptions in these sec-
tions. . The new secretary of the
bureau of provincial informa-
tion, Ernest McGaffey, is keep-
ing the local bureau well sup-
plied with government literature.

New Naturalization Act

Hon. C. J. Doherty, in moving
the second reading of the bill re-
specting British nationalily in
the house of commons, outlined
the chief difference between the
old and the proposed new law.

The existing law requires a
residence of three years, while
under the present bill the period
is fixed at five years. This five-
year period, however, need not be
passed by the applicant in that
particular portion of the empire
wherein seeking naturali-
zation, twelve months
