The invention by John Oliver Arnold, professor of metaliurgy at Sheflield University, of a new undeveloped mineral resources of British Columbia, Says the Vic- toria Colonist. Some six or seven months Mr. J. A. Hodgkinson, director of the Island Mines, Lim- ted, Mr, Crawford Coates, president, discovered a big depos- it of molybdenum in the Lillooet Mining Division, adjacent to the P.G.E, This is probably the big- gest deposit of the mineral report- ed up to the present, although it is not all improbable that there’ are many others even larger to be found in the Province as time! ago managing goes on and the mineral wealth is, developed. At that time neither | Mr, Hodgkinson nor Mr. Crawford ‘Oates thought much of the find, | neither the value ef moiybdenum nor a knowledge of the commer- |} cial uses to which it might be put} being very apparent at the mom-| ent. When announcement of the discovery of the Engtish profes- came through in the London dispatch, however, they that the time was opportune call attention to the deposit sor to} in the Lilloet country. It is interesting to know that! Mr. Moreton Frewen, the well-| known British economist who ‘ame through the Province with} Premier Oliver about two months ago, his special mission being to look into the mineral-and timber possibilities of British Columbia, sited the Darey Division in the Lillooet country and met both M Hodgkinsor and Mr. Crawfor d| ‘oaltes. BUT DOES NOT EXPECT iT TO COME THIS YEAR Mrs, ©. Spofford, commissioner the Health Insurance Board, | who is also closely connected with the activities of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, has ;on |} worked in the interests of pro- hibition for many years. She has jdqne much public work along temperance lines and understands the progress of the liquor ques- jtion in this country very thor- ,oughly. “This country will never give up prohibition. People are be- coming too educated to take that retrograde step. It true that the present prohibition is loose and very ineffective. That is a fact that everyone must admit. Even the attorney-general of the province admits that there must ibe liquor legislation at the next session of the Provincial House. The prescription evil will have to |be remedied and the liquor allow- jance will probably be cut down to |the limit of 8 ounces. The way lit now anyone can get liquor lin almost unlimited quantities. \It on order and not on | prescription. The dry laws will lalso have to be more strictly en- forced.” Mrs. Spofford said that Do- | minion prohibition would come in of time, although there be a fight for, it. As far as the Dominion is concerned the | country will be wet again after January 4, but the Federal house j Will probably begin legislation on the question at the next session. |At present a commission consist- ling of some of Canada’s cleverest jmen is framing a report to hand federal government. On the jrecommendations of this report | witl be based the legislation that will follow. Though the question will be taken up at the next ses- sion, Mrs.-Spofford does not look for Dominion Prohibition this year. There are a great many monied interests who will work against it tooth and nail and these will have to be conquered.
