The Modern Woman And Masculine Habits. Women today are doing many things that their never did—things at which their grandmothers would be It is something to be thankful for that the era of false which characterised the Victorian period is just about passed oul, although its flavor still lingers in some sections of the older fashioned generation. Time was when prudery was carried so far that even the legs of a piano were draped. We have emerged from that age, however. There are few things nowadays that a man does, which women have not attempted—suecessfully also in most cases. An echo from the past was heard the other day, however, in the Supreme Court in New York in a separation suit, where the husband’s counsel tried to show that cigarettes had been found in the wife’s dresser drawer and tliat this constituted evidence of ‘‘bad character."’ This atavistic lawyer, however, wh his out of date idea of what was right for a woman, did not find favor with the court. The judge reminded him that New York was not Hickville, and the women of the West who are fond of the soothing herb will rejoice to know that it has been judicially decreed that to smoke is not necessarily immoral on their part. Many men, though, addicted to nicotine themselves do not care to think of their sweethearts or wives taking advantage of the solace afforded by the great nerve spother. Unreasonably, they just don’t like it. To Preserve the Health And Sanity of the Race. The staid fathers and mothers of St. Catherines in Ontario are sorely distressed, according to recent word from that place. The whole city has gone dancing mad. Every night in the week in that happy town there is some dance or other got up by the various clubs and organizations and the young people—and not they alone either—are scarcely ever a night at home. This peculiarity this season is not confined to St. Kitts, por even Canada. The condition is general throughout the Empire. Great Britain has got the bug, and South Africa and Australia as well. And France, too. Dancing is popular. mild form of the excitement under which the nations have lubored since 1914. It is the fashionable form of emotional exer- cise. The life of primitive man is freely interlarded with intense excitement. As an eminent medico has recently pointed out, the body and bodily health of man are intimately bound up with, having themselves arisen out of and developed from, the condi- tions of primitive life. And true health is impossible unless some adequate substitute is found for the violent physical activi- ties of savage life. The emotional accompaniments of the chase and the emotional uncertainties and hazards of uncivilized life generally must have a corresponding outlet in our stage of civili- zation, in order to preserve the health and sanity of the race. The nations have passed through more than four years of extreme emotional uncertainty, and are now aiming at comfort, stability and security. But the necessity for the exercising of the emo- tions remains. And following the line of least resistance, the present popularity of dancing has resulted. ~The staid fathers and mothers may not like it, but some outlet must be found if man is to keep sane and wholesome. Taking the Pep Gut of Elections. Time was when an election ‘meant something. Nowadays it hardly causes a ripple of the placid surface of the city’s daily activities. Time was when the policies of the different candidates would be discussed by practicallyeevery voter. Nowadays, it is the minority that will even vote. The voters, at least mostly, i! they have any opinions, keep them to themselves, like most of the candidates. Here we are two days before the date of the election and neither of the fourteen aldermanic candidates ior the three mayoralty contestants have raised their voice in public to tell us about themselves or to give the voters a chante of mothers shocked. modesty finding out by asking them questions. Possibly they consider that their record is an open book, If so, they take a lot for granted. The public is noted for its short memory. — _ steer SS — _—— ANNOUNCEMENT DR. JOSEPH F.
