PLENTY OF ORE IS ALREADY IN SIGHT A meeting of the Board of Trade last night approved the action of the committee in sending an urgent petition to Premier Oliver asking for the establishment of a .v0-ton smelter unit here this year in order to prevent the mines getting into the hands of Ameri- can smelters, and to keep the in- dustry at home. The following is the petition, copies of which were forwurded to the member for the district, Hon, T. D. Pattullo: The Petition. Acting under pressure from the entire northern mining district, delegation from this boand Minister of Mines, pointing out to him the absolute necessity of the immediate creation of a hundred- ton unit smelter to be located in the central part of this district, presumably near Prince Rupert, to take cane of ore tonnage now being handled. The Minister of Mines gave this delegation a very sympathetic hearing and promised to do everything in his power towards granting assistance along the most needed lines. He informed the delegation that he intended to make a personal survey of the entire district during the early summer, and while we know and feel that he will do this just as soon as he can possibly get away, we fear that the delay, slight as it may seem, will prove very in- jurious to the future mining in-} terests of this part ofthe prov- ' ’ . Already Alienated. We would respectfully call your attention to the fact that the Premier, at Stewart, has passed into the control of the Guggen- heim interests while the Foarty- Nine, at Stewart, as well as the Last Chance and Tiger, of Alice Arm, are practically controlled by Guggenheim men. We par- ticularly desire to draw your at- tention to this fact for the reason that, if prompt measures are not taken, for the immediate con- struction of a smelter here, to take care of the smaller proper- ties they will in a very short time pass into control of the bigger interests, thus being the cause of the ore being shipped out of the to smelters whose in- terests are affiliated with the Guggenheims., This northern country is es- sentially a mining district and we know that both yourself and the Hon. Mr. Sloan will appreciate what we say when we state that we feel that our government should grant us the same sup- port in the development of our mines as is done in the develop- ment of farm lands and other pro- ductive pursuits. We, therefore, respectfully urge upon your government the ad- visability of going into this prop- osition immediately with a view to making proper arrangements for the construction of a smelter at or near Prince Rupert, thereby enabling the smaller; property holder to successfully carry on his workings, aiding in the de- velopment of this district, and of such country keeping the working properties under Canadian con- trol. — seem prmacs nme rms ea rms mms ommns tome ES The Man in the Moon SAYS:- j cg pemsrcenattmeatmng remavmmarmeaomncomneraut omni THAT the police commissioners have successfully “passed the buck” in regard to the efliciency of the force.
