OTTAWA, Feb, 23.—Apparent lack of barack accommodation is causing the militia department the gravest concern. It is stated that in only two out of eleven points, where units of the per- manent force are stationed is ac- commodation adequate. At Win- nipeg the militia department has secured good accommodation and at St. Johns, Que., there are suit- able quarters for the one squad- ron of cavalry stationed there, but it cannot be said that the accom- modation is suitable at Halifax, Quebec, Montreal, Kingston, To- ronto, Calgary, Regina, Vancou- ver, or Victoria. STEWART Returned men of Stewart were the guests at a most enjoyable smoker held in the town hall on Wednesday night. Greene provided excellent enter- tainment with comic war slides and others assisted with music, songs and recitations. Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Marks en- tertained a number of their friends from both Hyder and Stewart at bridge and dancing in the new Hyder bank building on Monday. . = e George Frizzell has opened a temporary butcher shop in the Austin building at Hyder until his own building is erected. J e s Pat Daly, to whose faith in the development of a big mine at the Premier the success of the camp is largely due, has left for a visit with his mother at Nelson. She is over 90 years of age. . - The Stewart Citizens’ Associa- tion adopted a resolution that thene is no necessity for the em- ployment of Orientals in the Portland Canal district. A sign is to be posted on the wharf ad- vising that Orientals are not re- quired. The district is experiencing one of-the finest winters in the mem- ory of the old timers. The wea- ther is very mild and there has been considerable rain during the week just past. There has been but one period of cold weather the whole winter through. Only about three feet of snow is left on the beach but the sleigh jitney be- tween here and Hyder is still be- ing maintained. There has been a steady influx of settlers all winter.
