Thursday, March 25, (929, —— = DAILY EDITION, City Council and Locai Merchants. It is to be assumed that local merchants are making only a legitimate protit. Some of them are making more than a bare living. They have to make a certain percentage of prolit over the prices paid for their goods. If they do not, the landlord will form a league wilh the bailiff and the There are exceptional business men who become rich. have the happy faculty of always buying right and of pleasing their customers and then of reinvesting the money immediately so that il will always be earning. Sometimes the big fortunes are made from speculation. If it is correct that merchan ts are making only a reasonable profit, it seems hardly correct for the city couneil to try to gel a third party to put them out of business. They want cheaper food. We all want cheaper food, but from a civic point of view it is not good business to put the grocer on the rocks. We de- pend on our grocers for our food supply. If they were charging very high prices compared with what they pay for goods, others would come in and put them out of business: ‘There would be no need. for the Gity Council to act. When Mr. Prudhomme came in from Telkwa and told the mayor and aldermen that, while he would like to do business here he did not come 10! the purpose of putting the grocers out of business, he was per fectly correct in his attitude. Why should there be hostility t the men who provide us with the necessaries of life? business will disappear. ‘They Americanization Through Movies. : A campaign of Americanization of the varied peoples of the United States by means of the movies is going on. It is found that the mevies form one of the} greatest educational forces. im ihe country, in that they appeal ven more to the ignorant than to the educated. Everyone aitenjds the movies and if the tone of the picture is rightly directed it is bound te have a wonder!) effect. The appeal, of the movies to lithe foreigner who cannot read ihe newspapers printed in Englikh and who has no particuiat wish to become Americanized, is invaluable, Given a proper patriotic tone and they are bound to secure results. In Canada there is need of education along these lines. There is a great field for this class of Mex in the movie theatre. The newspapers try to do it to some @éxtent, but they do not appeal io the man or woman who is un&ble to read and write English. They do not appeal very strongly to the Japanese and Chinese as only a comparative few read the newspapers. The schools are very big factors, but the film manufacturers have a great opportunity. Town and Country Necessary to Each Other. Prince Rupert finds herself dependent on the country dis- tricts for a proper supply of food. She wants meat and eggs and butter and milk and all the other articlés that come to the table. The country districts need the towns in which to sell their pro- duce. There is an interdependence that cannot be avoided. Sometimes we in the cities are apt to think ourselves the all important factor in the country, and the same has been said of the farmer. Neither is more important than the other. We want the fresh butter, eggs and milk, for instance, from the Skeena and Bulkley valleys and they want the market here for the goods. We can work together to good advantage. The wholesalers in this city do a lot of business in the interior districts, for Prince Rupert is gradually becoming the distributing point for the country west of the Rockies, We can all work together to build up a great country, a prosperous com- munity, that will be filled with happy homes and will be a powel in the land.
