VICTORIA, April 6.—When the Hon. T. D. Pattullo, minister of iands, introduced his amendment to the Forest Act he did so with the knowledge that he was making provision for the continuation of a policy already in opération in connection with the exportation of logs from this province. In novine the second reading of the bill he took occasion to point out to the House that the amendment in question represented the con- judgment of those most vitally interested in the lumber industry, whose concern, how- ever, comprehended the safe: guarding of a fundamental in- dustrial asset to British Colum- bia. sidered Opposition Efforts. Opposition members promptly took the view that the minister of lands virtually had delivered the logs of this province to Amer- ican interests who would proceed to denude the forests of this part of the country for the benefit of allied manufactories on the other, ‘sage through the Legislature Mr. | | Pattullo obseryed as follows: | “The occasional export of logs | is merely a safety valve to save | waste. It is regulated with the! greatest care and both the manu- | ‘facturing and logging industries | co-operate with the Department of Lands in seeing that no export is ever allowed which in the slightest degree works against! home manufacture of the natural resources of our province, How little the amount of export even of the ‘by-product’ material re- | ferred to above is shown by the figures for the past year: Logs| scaled, 1,214,090,000 feet; allowed | to be exported, 10,000,000 which does not even amount to one per cent of the logs cut. The effect on the market in British Columbia, the manufac- ; turing industry and the consum- | ing public is thus obviously neg ligible. } “In 1915 under the last ad-| ministration there was allowed to! | feet, be exported some seventy-six mil-| a feet to relieve the congestion | ‘logs then on the market. Ex- ee t continued without restraint} until the present machinery for | the strict regulation of export was established just two years ago. Ii has worked most successfully both in the interests of the pub- lic and the important industries concerned, and the amendment merely provides for the continu- Wii!
