THE DAILY NEWS ? Thursday, April 8, 1920. CONVENTION OF LABOR PEOPLE Governments, Employers and Em- ployees Will Have Conference to Discuss Extension of Laws. OTTAWA, April 8.—There will be a conference in Ottawa, prob- ably befere the end of this month, of representatives of the different provincia] governinents, labor and employers who will seek to co-| ordinate the various provincial | laws affecting labor and, at the| same lime, consider the extension | of the provisions of the Industrial | Disputes Act. This announcement was made by Senator Robertson, minister of labor, in introducing amendments , to the act, which provides for, arbitration in the case of disputes between the employers and em- | ployees in public utilities. Sena- tor Robertson stated that he pro- posed the conference in accord- ance with the action taken at the industrial conference last year. |} The question of extending the! Lemieux Act to cover private in- dustries, which could not be, classed as public utilities, wiil also be reconsidered and the pro- | vincial governments will be asked | to take steps themselves to bring such provisions into force or allow the Lemieux Act to be ex | tended. This would guarantee a square deal for every man em-! ployed whether in public utilities | or not. | | JURISDICTION OF | COMMERCE BOARD ‘IS CHALLENGED) Retail eveeanin ti Canadian Manu- | facturers and Alberta Attorney General Question. | | s OTTAWA, April 8.—Argument} has been granted by the Supreme Court on the application to tes the jurisdiction of the Board af Commerce and the constitutional- ity of Section 17. of the Combines and Fair Prices Act, under which the Board of Commerce is given powers of as a price-fixing tribu-! ‘Inal. The hearing will take place in the Supreme Court on May 4 next. Application was brought on] March 15 by counsel for the Re- tail Merchants Association and the Canadian Manufacturers’ As- sociation, Attorney General of Alberta and others questioning the legality of the act in for- yidding the hoarding of com modities, in appointing the Board of Commerce to impose penalties for offences against the act and require provincial courts to de- ide them, in giving the board power to decide on unfair profits in purely provincial transactions and in prohibiting the export of ommodities from Canada. When the Supreme Court sat yesterday to read judgments at the end of the term no decision was handed down in this particu- lay case and it is understood that i tr man — ——— ——— = Do not forget to file your Income Tax Return on or before the 30th of April, 1920.
