Several days ago, how- ever, the legal representative of the Taylor Engineering Co,—in whose behalf the legislation was enacted—was asked by the deputy minister of justice to’ show cause why the act should not be dis- allowed. As the matter stands at time no disallow- ithe moment, the Government of this province apparently is not considered of sufficient import- ance by the Federal authorities to be advised of a pending decision in respect of one of the statutory enactments. “As we have pointed out before there is no earthiy reason wits this measure should be interfered with by the Dominion Govern- ment. side the competence of the pro- yincial legislature. Nor must it be supposed for one moment that course than to re-enact the legis- ties disallow it. Certainly an op- portunity should be taken in that event to demonstrate to the Fed- eral Government, British Colum- bia’s resentment of such an un- warranted invasion of the rights bestowed upon it by the terms of the Union.” It was stated in the Times a few days ago that in the event of disallowance of the Dolly Varden of last session, Pre- mier Oliver will cause a new measure to be brought in to be passed before the present session ends, re-enacting last year’s set- tlement in favor of the Taylor Company. Si cmt ts re ee . * e { Mining News - ; sn tr sr re BE The building of coal bunkers for the Granby company’s mint at Cassidy's Siding on Vancouver Island is now under way and they will likely be completed in a few weeks’ time. The new bunkers are located on a small bay about a mile and a half south of Lady- smith off Oyster Bay. It had originally been intended to locate ;jthe bunkers across the harbor from Ladysmith and run a short jrailroad from Cassidy's to them but a number of cincumstances ‘made the later adopted plan th ‘more ecoonmical, As it is now, _the line of the KE, & N. railroad is used and the only new railroad ‘construction is the building of a short spur from the main iine to the bunkers. * * . One of the diamond drills which has been used up the Ecstall river by the Granby company during last summer’s season ‘is being brought out soon to be taken up to Stewart. The big copper com- pany is no doubt wide awake to the possibilities in that district and although its name has not been prominently connected wit! mining there, they are none the less interested in it. Their op erations are not given widespread publicity but it is well known that they have made investigations i: the Alice Arm district for some years. From all appearances it would seem that they had aban- doned that fleld now but real miners don't think so. Big com- panies are very strong on that virtue, “‘watchful waiting’ and the Granby is no exception. . . . A great deal of interest is be- jing taken at the Seattle mining jconvention in the coal samples brought down from the North |; Thompson coal measures. As tte seam now being opened up has attained a thickness of 43 inches, all clean coal, there seems to be jevery prospect of the property ;proving a commercial success. The product is a heavy, bright, }bituminous coal, burning: clearly }without clinker and very little ash. Eight carloads have been shipped to the Queen Bess mine jat Blackpogl for test in the steam | plant where it has proved superior ;to any fuel previously in use. . * ° | Reports indicate that there is ‘an inereasing demand for copper, jand in response to this more ac- |tivity has been manifested in the ;copper shares on the New York (Stock Exchange. For some two |years copper stocks have been sluggish, this being a direct re- jflection from falling off in the earnings from the early period of the world war.- The statement that last year saw more copper ,consumed than ever before in the ,histony of the industry was rath- ‘er startling, since production for the most of the year was at a low lebb, On the other hand con- lsumption was by no means a |Positive guide to production, since | the amount consumed represented }a reduction of the copper surplus. ‘According to present figures this |surplus has been practically eliminated, and with the estab- \lishment of a revolving fund to aid European purchasers of the ‘inetal, the copper should meve ifreely to the point of demand and pr ‘duction would be expected to | increase, .- - Once again the inventiens of war are being used effectively in the pursuits of peace. The miners at Pincher, in the Oklahoma min- ng district, have adopted steel wImets when working in exposed places where fragments of rock re likely to drop from consider- able heights as in shaft sinking. For many years Cornish miners working in similar places have used Derby hats that were hard- ened by painting with boiled linseed oil.
