Our minds can interpenetrate other minds, whether they be near at hand or far away. Our spirits-can intermingle with other spirits, whether they be “in the body or out of the body,” and so hold communion together. This is the fellowship of the spirit. Let us take, first, the case of a pupil and his teacher. The one may be at his desk On the platform, and the other in his seat in the school-room. Their bodies are completely separated by an intervening space, but their minds meet. The teacher's mind glows with the knowledge he wishes to impart. ‘The pupil's mind responds to this glow. It is not simply that the thought of the one mind passes into the other mind, but the spirit of the one intermingles with the spirit ef the other. This is the fellow- ship of the spirit, Applying to this experience the test of moral value, we find that not only has knowdelge been imparted, but the one person has received an inspiration from the other person. | ‘ There has been an inter-penetration of personality. Fellowship Of Spirit. Let us take, next, the case Of a disciple and Christ. We need not go back to the time when Christ was upon earth “in the days of His flesh,” for exactly the same kind of fellowship which St. John had with his Master when he leaned upon His bosom can be held today between a Christian in the flesh and Christ in the Spirit. The modern disciple, taught by psychology, focuses his attention upon Christ in all the goodness of His character, and all the power of His Spirit. . Through the Perfect Man he enters ito communion with the Infinite God. M is the fellowship of the spirit, Applying to this experience the test of moral value, we find that all that is highest and best in the disciple has been quickened by the touch of the Spirit of Christ. ‘There not only inspiration, but newness of life. ‘There has been an inter- penetration of personality. Let us take, yet again, the case of a grown-up son and his departed mother. In a quiet, restful moment, without the ir- trusion of strangers, the son recalls to his mind the devotion and love of his mother. Her familiar face comes vividly before him. He thinks of all she wanted him to be while she was with him in the flesh. He holds communion with her in the spirit. This is something very different from going to a strange medium, or listening to table-rappings. No words may be spoken, but he is inwardly conscious of his mother’s presence. This is to him a living reality. It is the fellowship of the spirit. Applying to this experience the test of mora! value, we find that his mind is not in any degree unhinged, or his energy in aly way paralyzed, as by some semi-physical ‘apparition of a startling character. On the contrary, he goes forth to his daily work determined to be worthy of his mother’s love, and to come up to her expectation of him, There has been an interpenetration of personality. Unifying Spirit me 3° , Pervading All. hie bs rae Reviewing these three cases, there is borne in upon us the conviction that there is something which unifies them all. It is the fellowship of the spirit. Each human mind, while it is in a limited sense an individual mind, is at the same time a part of the Universal Mind, This explains the nature of the communal mind, which is something far more than a collection of isolated minds.. This explains the possibility of thought exchange, because mind is linked with mind in a vast mental system, Each human spirit, while it has characteristics of its own, is at the same time a part of the Universal Spirit. No greatet popular error could be made than to think of some human spirit, whether embodied or disembodied, as @ separate unit all alone by itself. ‘This would, indeed, hell, for « human spirit is a social being. The individual personality of man springs from the Universal Personality of God, We live in God: “In Him we live and move and have our being,” but at thé same time God lives in us: “It is God who works in you.” This explains how there can be an interpenetration of personality, Every particle of our material body which we possessed ten years ago is now buried in the dust, but our same personality can still hold fellowship with the same Eternal Father, As St. Paul so clearly puts it “Though our Outward man is decaying, yet our inward man is renewed day by day.” , In the Commonwealth of the Spiritual the only thing which ean separate us is not the distance in space, but the disharmony of selfishness, In the Society of all who truly love, and are loved, is to be is ~ be found the Unity of the Spirit, for God is Love and Love is God.
