6th of August a notice appoars|
cancelling the removal from the |
service of Captain H. §., Smart. |
Indian Army, which was notified)
in the Gazette of the 4th of June}
last, |

The circumstances of the ease |
are as follows:—Captain Smart, |
53rd Sikhs, attached Kyber Rifles, |
was granted short leave in Dec-|
ember last, and did not rejoin o:
its expiration. All inquiries fail-
ed to trace him and he was, there-
fore, removed from the service.
It has since been ascertained that

his action was due to his strong

 

desire to join the force in France.
j[t appears that he came to this
country and enlisted in the name
iof Thomas Hardy into the 2nd
| Battalion Queen's Royal West}
| Surry Regiment. While serving |
jwith this battalion as a private
| he was killed in action at Festu-
jbert on the 17th May, 1915, where
lhe displayed such gallantry that
he would have been granted the
medal for distinguished conduct
in the fleld had he survived.
