The son was still alive at an early hour this morning, but attending phy- son, sicians have abandoned all hope of his recovery and it is doubt- ful if he will survive the day. Capt. Birkeland has been charge of the company’s whaling station at Akutan since the early spring. The son, who was a mem- her of the company, has been ill for nearly a year, during which in time he underwent six operations. His condition did not become crit- ical, however, untl a few weeks ago. When physicians expressed doubt to the father was notified by cable and he immediately started for Seattle on the Unimak. The whaler was stormbound for six days at Kodiak Island and had rough tme during the entire trip. Capt. Birkeland feared that son had died before he could reach his bedside, but when he was told he was still alive he rushed to the Seattle General Hospital as soon as he landed and remained throughout the night. The son recognized his father and after an exchange of greet- ings lapsed into unconsciousness, as his recovery, an unusually his from which he had not recovered at an early hour this morning.
