J30, PONY EXPRESS, MASSACRE OF MINING MEN BY YAQUI INDIANS Bandits were Supported by Villa’s Officers—One Man Escapes Out of Nineteen—Fears of Further Trouble. (Special to The Dally News.) El Paso, Jan, 13.—Thomas B. Holmes, the sole’ survivor of nineteen American mining men, who were massacred in Box Can- yon, has arrived here. Holmes says that the train in which he was travelling was stopped by an obstruction on the tracks and the party ordered out. Twenty bandits opened fire on the party as they alighted from while two hundred, as a reserve force, stood by the right-of-way. Holmes ran; dived under a bush and hid in a river bottom while the party of miners was massacred. General Pablo Lopez, a Yaqui chieftain and an ally of Villa, commanded the massacre. Further Murders. It is reported that ten more people, including several English- men and one American woman, were massacred yesterday at Ma- dera by Villa’s general Jose Rod- riguez. Fearing an anti-Mexican demonstration by the hundreds of Americans who were waiting at the station for the arrival of the bodies, the police sent the death special through to the freight yards of the Santa Fe Railway. A train with two hundred men and machine guns proceeded to the scene of the massacre at Box Canyon. The scenes depict Paris in the year 1610 and are quaint and picturesque. The story is full of vitality and interest, while the coloring lends a distine- tive touch of realism. The parts are in the hands of stars of the French movie world, and the drama is one not to be missed.
