The shipbuilding announce- ment made by the Hon. A. C. Flumerfelt at Victoria yester- day is the last gasp declaration of a man who sees defeat and disaster staring him in the face. If Flumerfelt was doom- ed to defeat before, he is now doomed and damned by his own act. The announcement that legislation will be intro- duced within ten days to pro- vide two millions for the build- ing of ten ships, five to be built in Victoria and five else- where, is the most transparent attempt ever made, even by a government, to pur- chase support, Individual sup- port has been purchased freely in the past with the people’s money, but here we have a flagrantly crude effort to buy all the people at one fell swoop. When will such men _ realize that there are some _ things which cannot be bought? It is an insult to the intelli- gence of the people of Victoria to flaunt such a bait before fore them, when, at a mass meeting in Vancouver only last Thursday, Mr.Flumerfelt heard Mr. Tisdall intimate that the shipbuilding plans of the gov.. ernment were still incomplete. It is simply an intimation that these plans were completed, not for the benefit of the prov- ince but as a hastily improvised measure to try and redeem the support which was lost in Van- couver on Saturday. Over the weekend, the Tory suipbuilding scheme was completed, or in other words, Bowser decided on a last great attempt to buy support, Nothing would please the people of British Columbia better than to have shipbuild- ing go ahead, and the people of Prince Rupert would wel-|be come such a measure, but the Bowser politicians who will try ¢0 make a deal of the kind outlined by Mr, Flumerfelt are doomed. Flumerfelt simply made public the fact that he believed the people of Victoria could be bought and that the price was five ships with a promise of more to come. Flumerfelt is pretty much in the position of the Turks and Bulgarians and he will receive his just reward, as they will. It is funny to contemplate what this gentleman would have offered had he been run- ning say in Prince George. It would not have been ships, of course, and it would certainly have included the immediate completion of the Pacific Great Eastern and the beginning of the construction work into the Peace River country. Failing everything else, he might just as sensibly have promised every man in the constituency a job for the life of the administra- tion at a wage of $30 per week. Ever since last April, the Bow- ser bunch have been paving the PAR DAILY NEWS “The Perfect.Day” is the day when you work in har- mony with law. Health comes from Harmony. E, Tisdal) did not know that this big ship- building scheme was to be put through in ten days. Had he been able to announce the fact he might have been elected. Flumerfelt is to have a fleet of ships to support him ‘in the de- fence of the Tory citadel in Vic- toria, while poor Tisdall had only infantry.
