HOW COLONEL CURRIE LOST HIS DECORATION Ottawa, March 14.—Rumor has it that Lieutenant-Colonel Currie will run as an independent candi- ‘date in North Simcoe if he runs lat all. His break with the gov- lernment is not easily patched up Lieven if the colonel were disposed ito try. Colonel Currie is a message from the“battle front and a dis- turbing one. It seems that favor- itism is at work in the Canadian Young whipper-snap- pers who have family pull are promoted rapidly while old sol- diers who do their duty are passed over. The chief mistake seems to have been in placing any but a Canadian general at the head of It takes only a cursory glance at the re- the Canadian forces. commendations for honors’ to show that General Alderson is a sreat respector of persons when it comes to handing out medals. Another matter Colonel Currie -|cleared up in his speech was the unfair and unwarranted insinua- tions that have been directed to- ward him ever sinee he was pulled off the job some eight months ago. Nobody who knows John Currie would ever accuse him of lack of courage and if lack of udgment is the charge then a large number of British generals are due for retirement in short order. At this distance it looks is if the British generals were great experts at “passing it on.” General Ian Hamilton did that same at Gallipoli, General Stop- ord being named as the goat, and the practice is also said to be quite general on the western front. As the reward of eighteen months unsuecess in France, Mield Marshall Sir John French was brought back to England and made a baron. The opinion is freely expressed that the minister of militia for Canada could do good work stand- ing up for the rights of Canaatan officers who are sometimes sac- rificed to the blunders of their British commanders, These re- marks go a little further than Golonel Currie’s criticisms, but they are a fair inference from his suggestion that Canada should be represented on the Headquarters Staff and in the army councils. Canada is contributing half a million men and a half @ billion in money to this fight and is con- sequently entitled to give her share of advice, Some enthusiasts are in favor of Canadians entirely suspending their intellectual facilities during the period of the war and letting the British War Office muddle along without remark. But this consorts neither with good sense nor true loyalty. If we are going to be as British as the British we eannot afford to be less frank than the British in our criticism of the blundering. It is worth noting that the Tory press in London has never shirked its duty in this respect. It was a poet, and a dead poet at that, who said “Theirs not to reason why, theirs but to do and die.” The English newspapers do not talk that way. Reasoning why is one of the best ROUMANIA AND BULGARIA HAVE BEEN #1GHTING Russia Arranges to Transport her War Material Through Rou- manian Territory—The Treaty Signed. ss (Special to The Dally News.) London, March 13.—Hostilities have commenced between Rouma- nia and Bulgaria, A Bulgarian battery in the River Danube, as- sisted by an Austrian gun-boat, attacked a Roumanian ship which was loading cargo in Roumanian waters. Roumanian plied to the attack and there were casualties on both sides. Roumania and Russia. reports state that Roumanid has signed an agree- troops re- Bucharest ment with Russia arranging for the passage of her war materiaf® across Roumania. _Russia_ will give Roumania‘a position in Bes- sarabia in return for this privil- ege. POLICE COURT W. J. Sampson, the man who was brought up from Vancouver on a charge of obtaining board and lodging fraudulently, was brought up before the magistrate today. The journed. case was again ad- things they do. Colqnel Currie is merely following a good example. The gist of Colonel Currie’s complaint is that he would have got his decoration if Major Gen- eral Sir Sam had said so. All it needed was the minister’s O. K. and for some reason or other, that was withheld. Instead of medals which are dear to the soldier's heart, Sir Sam now hands out a certificate of character to the effect that Colonel John Currie was a brave man and did the best he could underp the circumstances. This is faint praise and comes late, To get it Colonel Currie had (Continued on Page Two) WESTHOLME OPERA HOUSE.
