BOWSER AND ROBLIN The resemblance political happenings in British Columbia and in Manitoba be- between comes more marked every day. In the prairie province, where the ex-premier and several of his friends are awaiting trial criminal charges, things reached such a pitch of de- bauchery that at last things began to leak through, in spite of all the efforts of a slavish, subsidised press. When the matter of the Parliament build- ings scandal was broached, the Roblin bunch offered the most plausible story imaginable and it was not until matters reach- ed a climax, and a commission of judges was appointed, that the followers of Bob Rogers crawled into their holes. Taking thought, in their own low criminal fashion, they de- vised the plan of trying to throw some of their own mud over the Liberal party by claim- ing in the most brazen manner possible that the Liberal leader, Mr. Norris, now the respected premier of the province and the leader of a really progres- sive government, had been a party to the diabolical Tory Schemes. What happened? When the commission was through with its searching in- vestigation, an investigation in which it was hard to get all the evidence because of the de- struction of much of the cor- respondence, it was found that, not only were the Liberals per- fectly clean, in spite of the as- sertions of one of the most prominent lawyers in Winni- peg, but that Roblin and Com- pany must stand trial. The Tories of British Co- lumbia stand convicted, on the evidence of their own witness- es, of having squandered the on public funds amongst their party friends in the most prof- ligate manner. They stand convicted of setting aside the laws of the province in order that theip friends might make money. The McKenzie & Mann registration fees case is just little instance of their methods, while the hand- ing out of $75,000 to Joe Mat- son was In the face of their record of misgovern- ment and worse, in every cor- ner of the province, a record which A. C. Flumerfelt, in the Victoria by-election, took par- ticular pains to stand from un- der, the only plan which ap- pealed to the Tory mind was the Roblin scheme of trying to throw some of the Tory mud over their opponents. In the choice of a target, they displayed their usual dia- bolical cunning, They did not attempt to attack H. C. Brew- ster. They knew that the rep- utation of H. C. Brewster was made throughout the province years ago and that they could not assail his good name. The only alternative was to attack, by the lowest possible means, the political character of M. A. Macdonald, a young man, who, though held in the very highest esteem by all who know him, was, comparatively speaking, an unknown man to the gen- eral public throughout’ the province. In spite of the dastardly at- tack upon the brilliant young member for Vancouver, in the form of veiled insinuation in the Matsonised press, it is very significant that, not one mem- ber of the Tory majority on the committee, in bringing down the report in the Legis- lature, dared to make a single charge against the character of this sterling man, nor did the attorney-general dare jn- dulge in anything like a direct charge, preferring to take ref- uge behind the impending court or save one another. proceedings. 2n# DAILY NEWS ————SES_ NO ALUM with his colors flying and he will be of the foremost legislators in this province his traducers of today have sunk to earth from which they sprung. one when the NOTES AND COMMENTS The details of yesterday’s naval battle were meagre but the mere fact that the German navy had at last shown some real fight was good enough news for anyone of British blood. J * . The Tories are much more in- terested in a blackened Liberal party than in a clean British Co- lumbia. The recent enquiries simply served to show more clear- ly the type of men who have been ruling in this province, The Tories tell plugging operations extended to Prince Rupert. Well, we must take their word for it, us that the were to be as they seem to be the only people who know anything about it. Fortunately, T. D. Pattullo is known throughout the north a man of the highest honor, that the Tory insinuations in re- gard to Prince Rupert simply fall back upon the Tories. anes The first McBride government owed its existence to ballot box trickery and it is simply in keep- ing with the reputation of the party that it should try to retain power by the same means. as s0 resumed Terms t!
