It should be, es it were, a keeper of the public conscience.’’—Henry Watterson, Daly EDITION. THURSDAY, MAy 4 THE NEEDS OF PORCHER ISLAND Twenty miles away from Prince Rupert lies Porcher Island, the vegetable gardea for the Tsimpsean Peninsula, and the nearest large piece of arable land to Prince Rupert. Its settlement is of vital interest to the people of Northern British Columbia in general and of the vegetable dealers and vegetable eaters of Prince Rupert ia particular. That settlement would be much helped by the giving of a better mail and steamboat service to the Island. On the north, Refuge Bay is row in receipt of a mail service, and is a regular port of call for the vessels on the Graham Island run. The dwellers at Refuge Bay have no cause for complaint. Further south however, at Spillar River a large settlement has spruag up, which is isolated from the world so far as mail service and boat service is concerned. There are forty-five men within a radius of two miles at Spillar River, and settlement would be much helped if they were brought closer into touch with the worid. There are ouly three families there, sad to relate, for as some of the settlers say, ‘It isn’t fair to take a woman into a place where there’s no means of communication.” The irony of it is that the settlers there see almost daily some vessel or another passing the settlement on its way to or from Prince Rupert. The place is on the route of the northera run, only a mile or so from the steamboat track. If the boats took the channel on the west side of Kennedy Island instead of the east channel they would be even nearer. The channel is buoyed and charted, and the settlers claim there is deep water up te within sixty feet of the shore. The harbor at Spillar River is a safe one. Indeed in heavy weather it is a favorite resort for storm bound steamers. There would be no navi- gation difficulties about making a ca!l, with mail and freight once a week. At present the settlers have to row ten miles to Claxten on the mainland for supplies. Their mail they trust to receiving when one or other of their number makes a visit in a sailboat to Prince Rupert. This ic 2 matter which the mail and steamboat authorities might do well to look into. It would prove a general benefit if Spiilar River and any other of the settlements could be made a port of call. The settlers claim that owing to the lack of steamboat trans- portation last fall hundreds of heads of celery and a lot of potatoes were left to rot in the ground. This was a loss both to them aad to us. Sixteen mineral claims are being worked for copper and iron by George Keyes and his partner, but they cannot ship ore or put on gangs until transportation is arranged. Six free milling claims on Lewis Island, opposite the mouth of the river have just changed hands, and a crusher is on its way to the Island, and much more in the way of development could be done if facilities were granted. We all live by trade and production; that is a truth that requires no argument. For our own interest, it would be a good thing to help the development of Porcher Island, and make possible a mutual inter change of trade and products. COAL NOTICE ‘Fruit : Produce : Feed H. H.
