It should be, as it were, a keeper of the public conscience.’’—Henry Watterson. wre THE PRUDES IN A PANIC TUESDAY, May 16 DAILY EDITION. Toronto has just had another spasm of purism, following an agitation in which the morals of schoolchildren were made the subject of some sensational allegation: by a public school principal. There is no sneer intended in the selection of the word spasm, nor in the reference to Toronto's reputation for puritanical zeal. Spasm correctly describes the nature of the efforts, which in their aim are entirely worthy. In aiming to guard the morals of her people, and especially of her boys and girls, the city authorities of Toronto are in the right. The city should be the great protector of the moral and physical life, the great educator, the great philanthropist, the great administrator, the great over-parent of its citizens. The pity of it is that the effort at moral idealism should be spas modic instead of continuous; should be the result of emotional shock instead of cool reasoning. A patent observer, trained to scientific modes of thought would probably arrive at different conclusions. Instead of concluding as does the affrighted school principal that there are epidemics of moral laxity, he would probably find the roots of the evil in the economic conditions under which a portion of the people in Toronto live. With a large class of young women, hungry for happiness and the joy of life, yet doomed to work in stores and factories at a bare living wage, with thousands of young men similarly situated, unable to afford to offer homes and wife-hood to the women workers, and with yet another class of well-to-do idlers and pleasure seekers, the inherent compulsion of society towards the formation of courtesan classes and courtesan patronage would be obvious to him. So too, in regard to the revelations among school children, he would probably find the reason on the one hand in the neurotic con- ditions of mcdern life, the tenser atmosphere, the quickened imagina- tion which attends life today, and on the other hand the conspiracy of silence with which the facts of the life-processes are shrouded. Our modern economic life and the trend of education make the child inquisitive: and on the most important subject of all, society con- spires to leave him to find things out for himself any way he can. Unscientific diagnosis engenders unscientific remedies. The purists in Toronto have descended upon the bookstores. They have confiscated the works of Guy de Maupessant and haled to the police court vendors of erotic fiction of the ‘‘Three Weeks’’ and ‘‘The Yoke- type. But they have made no effort to rectify the economic conditions which create both victims and a market for the thing they deplore. As if the destruction of the works of Guy de Maupessant and the erotic school will destroy conditions which existed long before the school of eroticists was born. The irony of the thing is that some of the big storekeepers, who probably have driven more girls into the underworld than all the panders and paid procurers, are good church members, and for their souls’ sake would scorn to sell a copy of ‘‘Three Weeks.” Less satisfactory even than the well meant but fatuous efforts at moral refortn on the part of the police, are the efforts of the Library Board, who ought to know better. They have whisked everything off the library shelves and out of sight that might afford young readers an opportunity to learn those facts about the biology of sex that false standards of modesty preclude most people from discussing with their children. Hauffman's ‘House of Bondage’’ has gone the way of the erotics. As if in this as in every other thing, the world is not to be saved by knowledge, just as today it is damned by ignorance. And still we grow.
