Wal- ters from Premises Information was laid this morn- ing by George Walters, a Swede, against Dan MclInnis, contractor, to the effect that McInnis had assaulted Walters. The trouble took place in the Europa Hotel. Several Swedes who had quit the employment of McInnis at their own pleasure got haggling with the contractor over their time. They brought Walters along with them to do the talking as he knows English. Walters had never been employed by McInnis, and the contractor argued that he had no business in the tangle at all. So he ejected him from the hotel where the business was in progress. Dan is muscular and evidently used more strength than he knew. Walters’ ribs were hurt. Dan pleaded guilty to the assault charge this morning, and paid his fine of ten dollars and two dollars costs. ce LAND PURCHASE NOTICE Skeena Land District—District of Coast Take notice that I, Mrs. John Corley of Prince toapaly for beccalation woperchaee the folleeies apply for perm’ ure the followin described lends: P > Commencing at a it planted 4C chains east and 120 chains south ftom the southwest corner of lot 1783, Coast District, Range 5, thence south 80 ns, thence east 40 chains. thence north 80 chains, thence west 40 chains more or less to the point of commencement, containing 3820 acres more or less. Douglas Inquires if Coun- cil Could Have Venue Chang- ed—Mayor Replies That It is Too Late Now. Can the city council do anything to alter the venue of the trial of the strikers? was a question asked by Alderman Douglas last night at the city council meeting. He would have put the matter in the form of a motion that the council should do something, but was not very sure that this would be the best way. Mayor Manson informed Alder- man Douglas that the venue of the trial had now been fixed, and it was not possible for the city council to’ask or even suggest a change of venue. For the new alderman’s benefit the Mayor had the letter received last week from the Deputy At- torney General produced by the City Clerk. This letter refers to the proposal to hold a Supreme Court in Prince Rupert, stating that the matter is held over until after the Attorney General returns. CULVERT COLLAPSED How Did It Happen, and What Did It Cost? In the course of his walks around town recently Alderman Clayton discovered a culvert on Third avenue which had evidently collapsed while under construction. He moved at last night’s council, that a report be obtained about this, stating who was responsible for the work, how the collapse was caused, and how much it had cost to repair the trouble. Alderman / Smith seconded, and the motion was carried.
