THURSDAY, May 18 The spectacle of the two unfortunate workmen who were injured up the line on Monday morning being conveyed to the hospital from the train on the rocking floor of a heavy freight wagon, emphasised the need the city has for a proper ambulance. The sight of a strong man writhing in agony, is heart-racking enough. The sight of the two victims—one suffering agonies with a broken thigh—lying on the floor of the wagon, with only the hard tailboard of the cart for a pillow, their heads a foot below the level of their bodies as the cart climbed the steep declivity of Centre street, was one to convict us all of contributory negligence in not having a proper ambulance, or at least some proper stretchers for conveying the suffering men to the hospital. The scene is one that may be repeated any day. The road-bed of every railway is damped with blood. Accidents and fatalities are an unavoidable sacrifice on the altar of progress. Our own street grading work has meant death to one man, and maiming to several others. With the growth of the city the accident toll is bound to grow larger. An ambulance we are bound to have sooner or later. Getting it sooner may mean all the difference between life and death to many of us who will read these lines; it will certainly mean all the difference between doing all we can and not doing all we can, to alleviate the suffering of injured men and women and children. At present no one seems to know where even a stretcher may be found. After a day's inquiry, we are told that there is one at the Provincial Office. There is none at the Police Station or on the wharf, the two places where they are most likely to be called for. For lack of a stretcher one of the men suffered till he screamed with pain, as his helpers sought to carry him on a blanket through the narrow exit from the caboose to the street wagon. One kindly incident marked an otherwise entirely saddening episode. It was the action of the conductor of the caboose. With no equipment to provide for the care of the wounded men, he had tended the two unfortunates from the scene of the snowslide to the city. His bed, he had given up to the Bulgarian with the broken thigh. When the problem of how to move him came up, he proffered a blanket. When he saw how the man still suffered for lack of a proper conveyance he insisted on giving up the mattress from his bed to ease the sufferings of the man as they carried him to the hospital. Then he capped the kind deed by handing over his blankets to cover the unfortunates on their journey. It was a kindly deed, that deserves more praise than it may receive. It was the kind of thing that made an observer feel glad to share in a common humanity that is capable of such unselfish acts. But it was a poor substitute for a city ambulance. There can be no question of the city’s need for that. NOTES DUE ° Some folk are never satisfied. Vancouver newspapermen are raising a fuss now, because they have been denied admission to the jail. That story of the United States cruiser Buffalo suffering the tortures of Tantalus in Cordova harbor for lack of coal, would have gladdened the heart of Omar Khayyam. To be facing a territory containing hundreds of square miles of coal lands, which the Govern ment will not allow the Alaskans to work, to be 1,000 miles away from the nearest coaling station, the railway company, refusing to hand over any of its black diamonds imported at great expense from Can- ada. It is a merry mix-up, which Omar might have immortalised in a set of quatrains. There is one thing left. The cruiser might take the coal by force. Then would the enforcers of the nation’s law, break the law they would be stealing the coal to enforce. The captain of the Buffalo seems to be between the coal fiend and the deep sea. — To Lease Tg Section 22, 28, 24, 2 1 17 24 14 1,8 G. R. NADEN COMPANY Limited. Second Ave., Prince Rupert, B.C. THE DAILY NEWS PEACE NOW IS ASSURED General Amristice is to be De- clared in Mexico PEACE ENVOY TALKS Says that Armistice will Follow Within Twenty-four Hours Madero Announces Agree- ment Has Been Reached. (Canadian Press Despa‘ch) Juarez, May 18.—Peace is al- most an assured fact at last. This morning Judge Carbajal, the peace envoy of the Federal Government made an announce ment that his conference with the Provisional President Madero had resulted in terms being reached. He said that barring unforseen. difficulties, a general armistice would be de- clared within twenty-four hours. Provisional President Madero | also made a statement, declaring | that mutually acceptable propo- sitions had been reached at last, which assured peace to Mexico. THESE JURYMEN HAVE NO CINCH Jurymen at Cammorra Trial Treated Like Prisoners The reluctance shown by jury- men to serve on the trial of the Cammorroa chiefs now proceeding at Viterbo, in Southern Italy, is easily understood. The expected to last a year, during which peziod they will be kept shut in. Nor is this all. They know full well that after the trial over they will stand a very ex: | cellent chance of being murdered | by other members of the dreaded | organization to which the prisoners belong; that is to say, supposing they do their duty in. bringing in a verdict of guilty. This is no fanciful danger. When the jury were released after the trial of a number of members of the Mafia, at Bologna in 1902, they were guarded by soldiers | for several months. Yet one was assassinated and another severely Two others emigrated case is e 5 is | names and settled in New Orleans, yet they were followed and killed. The Mafia is, needless to say, merely the Cammorra under an- other name. The Black Hand is | terrible murder society, and this was responsible for the assassina- tion of a juryman named Pellizoni in New York a year ago. The unhappy man was the only Italian on a jury that convicted a member of the gang on a charge of black- mailing and arson, and was for that reason singled out for punishe ment, He was found dead in his shop one Monday morning, having been first tortured, and then barbarously killed, sometime during the pre- ceeding Sunday. No one was brought to justice for this shocking crime.
