The Grand Trunk Pacific Rail- way entered into a solemn agree- ment thét until such time as the main line to Prince Rupert was completed no branch lines should be built and particularly the branch from Fort George to Van- couver. People saw that this would give the merchants of this city a chance to establish them- selves in the new territory to be opened by this railway, so that when the competition of Van- couver had eventually to be met} they would have the advantage of| a solid connection and would thus be in a position to more than hold! their own. People came to Prince Rupert on this understanding and in most cases invested all they had in the world. But the merchants of Van- couver were alive to the immense possibilities of this new country and naturally wanted to secure this trade for themselves, and they had men in the legislature who did not look on their posi- tions merely as honorary sine- cures, but as sacred trusts to the people who sent them there. They on the government the claims of Vancouver to an imme- diate connection with the vast territory which the Grand Trunk Pacific will open up and an ar- rangement was entered into to defeat the objects of the clause respeeting branch lines inserted | in the charter of the road for the |} protection of Prince Rupert. | A charter was granted to the |contraeting firm which build- ing all the western section of the T. P. to build an independent road from Fort George to Van- couver. Surely the people of Prince Rupert could not object to this. But the people of Prince Rupert did object and notified pressed | | | is their “representative” at Victoria !of this objection. He replied that he was “carefully watehing” the bill to see that nothing was done \y hich might be detrimental to Wie Interests of this city. e | governinent arranged to guaran- the bonds of the company ; which is building this road, and i tee eir guarantee is good mainly for the reason that immense }sums have been taken from this | northern country for land, tim- ber, coal, ete. (to say nothing of |the government holdings — in | Prince Rupert, which the Premier |} himself estimates at thirteen mil- (lion dollars), and there is thus a jlarge surplus in the treasury. Still our member “watched care- fully’ but said nothing. To crown all, the company which is |to build the road from Vaneouver to Fort George arranges to lease |}the road when completed to the 1G. T. P. and it thus virtually be- | }ecomes the branch which the lat- ter road was forbidden to build unfil the main line had been completed. Surely this should have aroused Mr. Manson, but if it did he kept the facet carefully coneealed, as we have no men- tion of any protest being made by him, What do you think of it, you }people of Prince Rupert? Here | is a deliberate atlempt to put your city off the map and not one word spoken against the propo- sition by the man whom you have fapeorad representative, |}both in provincial and municipal affairs. The fact Mr. Manson has never given up the hope that some day if he is a good boy and | Washes himself behind the ears } and always does as he is told he may yet climb back into the posi- as your 1s, tion in the government from which the people of Alberni so unceremonious!)s ejected him ago, and he does not }go to Victoria as the representa- tive of Prince Rupert or the Skeena district, but as the repre- sentative of the house of Manson some years and some others, If a furniture dealer, we will say, wishes to secure a consider- able sum of money from the Do- minion government by supplying the furniture needed at the ma- rine depot at Digby Island, among other things, or a hardware man wishes to get rich by supplying the road camps with tools, ete., or a grocer would like a monopoly of supplying the provisions to these camps as well as the tele- graph camps, or a contractor wishes a strangle hold on the erection of all provineial and Do- minion public buildings, or a real estate man can see his way to charging the government an ex- orbitant rent for office space for public utilities, these people have a perfeet right to form them- PLAS AS~ OFF | for. j}ate a member who will so far forget his duty to his constitu- ents as to make no_ protest IS JOBBED GOVERNMENT selves into an association or syn- dicate to further these legitimate ambitions, and no one ean blame them so long as they keep within the law. But when a member for a great district is willing to be come the tool of such a combina- tion and to sacrifice the interests of his constituents that his pull may not be endangered, but be always at their service, he puts himself in a which even Judas Iscariot blush in orde! class would You cannot blame these few merchants if they are willing to see the interests of their city jeopardized if in the process they ean accumulate enough to make them independent of the fortunes of Prince Rupert, but what can be said of the remaining nine hun- dred odd citizens of the city pos- sessing voles if they endorse such a conspiracy on election day? They will deserve all and more than all that can happen to them if they do not absolutely repudi- against the worst blow which has ever been aimed at this city. But if you say it was impossible for Mr. Manson to have prevented this deal going through even if he had been willing to lose sight of that cabinet job for one mo- ment, he might at least have been enough to have secured something for Prinee Rupert in return. If an indignant repre- sentative of this city had been on his feet in and out of season the powers that be would have been only glad to have given the city something to lence it, even if it was found im- possible to resist the pressure of the lower mainland to the extent trader season Sl-| |Cleaning & Pressing Work Done ——————— e Owner will dispose of the following Lots in Section 2 or Quick Sal Lot Block Price Equity 1 and 2 16 $2100 $787.50 17 16 1050 401.25 57 & 58 12 2250 750,00 We can offer good terms on the Equity Call and see us G. There are two things whieh the people of Prince Rupert have unanimously petitioned for, even | } the Conservative party being united for onee on this matter. First, the sale of the reserved government lots in the sold por- tion of the townsite; and, second, a road around the island. This was a time when our representa- tive could have easily secured these concessions, and also prob- ably a free gift of the government wharf to the city, These are not exorbitant demands, Premier McBride himself says that the government holdings in this city are worth thirteen millions, and if this is so the most hidebound supporter of the government can- not claim that the government railway | = LAND PURCHASE NOTICE Skeena Land District—District of Cassiar. With these government lots paying taxes many important city improvements could — be undertaken, improvements which will be urgently needed if we are to have a chance against our envious neighbor to the south. Did Mr. Manson get us these things? He did not, and if you knew Mr. Manson as well as you should you wouldn't ask such a foolish question.
