Brewster, leader of the Liberal Columbia, party in British has published a statement of his position with regard to the writ against Mr. Bowser which should set at rest any doubt as to his real purpose. He is taking a step which should really be taken by Mr. Bowser himself if that gentleman has the interests of lieve, he would join Mr. Brew- ster in his attempt to settle the eral leader has offered to bring the matter before the courts in any way that best suits the premier, but the latter prefers to travel about the country misrepresenting his chief op- ponent. Surely no one can blame Mr, Brewster for the zealous interest he has shown on behalf of the people of Brit- British Columbia at heart. ) As Mr. Brewster explains, it} is absurd that there should be, any doubt as to the validity of | legislation passed since March 44. The premier is not sure when the legislature really ex- pired, but in spite of that un. certainty, refuses to meet Mr. Brewster half way. The latter states that every powerful in- terest adversely affected by the legislation will take advantage of every technicality to invali- date any measure which is against its interests and in this he is quite correct. Take as an example the Workmen’s Compensation Act. Supposing that during the course of time, a large cor- poration is held liable for dam- ages running into many thou- sands of dollars owing to the death or accident to a number of employees. The relatives bring suit to recover what they believe to be rightly theirs un- der the terms of the act, but lawyers for the corporation prove that the act was illegal and, therefore, inoperative. What is the resuit? The plain- tiffs are assessed heavy costs and are practically defrauded of the money to which they are entitled. Mr, Brewster is not seeking to invalidate all the legislation in question. He is merely try- ing to prevent troubie in the future. Ae he points out, the next legislature will be unable fo validate the legislation in question because it will have been elected improperly. If Mr. Bowser were as busi- nesslike as he likes us to be- ish Columbia. He is trying to guard them from loss, but it seems to be a thankless job in many respects. The Liberal leader has put the whole thing up to Mr. Bow- ser and can disclaim any fur- ther responsibility for the un- warranted delay in bringing the case before the proper tribunal. He has done his best for those who elected him to office. It is their.duty to stand behind him and help to bring order out of chaos.—Vancouver Sun.
