National Guardsmen Have to Use
Drastic Measures at Collieries
In Illinois

 

TAYLORVILLE, Ill., Oct. 17:—Gas
bombs and bayonets were used by
National Guardsmen in dispersing
picketers who were trying to pre-
vent strike-breaking miners from
oing to work at coal mines near
here. The guardsmen were called
out to protect the men as they went
o work at the mines and as they
were returning to their homes.

E. G. Newnham, formerly a mem-
ber of the local detachment of the
Royal Canadian Mounted Police
and for several years Dominion con-
stable for the Naas River. with
headquarters at Kincolith, has been
appointed Indian Agent at Alert
Bay.’ With Mrs. Newnham, he was
a passenger aboard the Cardena
last evening returning to Kincolith
after having spent a holiday in
Vancouver and Victoria. They will
be moving to Alert Bay next week.
Mr. Newnham succeeds W. M. Hal-
liday, for many years Indian Agent
at Alert Bay, who is being super-
annuated.

Mr. Newnham will receive the
hearty congratulations of many
friends in the north on his promo-
tion.
