In reply we suggest it is too soon yet to know whether the preferences given any of the Empire countries will be of benefit or not. We have before us a few figures dealing with some of the articles formerly imported in large quan- tities gree Britain. Take for instance cotton piece goods. Under the Borden and Meighen administrations the tar- iff on thane goods was 25'.. The Mackenzie King admin- istration reduced it to 18‘, but the Bennett government increased it to 61‘. and at the Imperial Conference it was reduced to British countries. That is typical of the textile business generally. The case of blankets is ra- ther an extreme qne. Borden set a tariff of 22.5’... Meighen increased it to of King reduced it to 20.25 3ennett increased it to 106’, and unde r the British Preference blankets come in from England or wih a duty of 78’. or must stay out. It w il be very interesting to note what effect these du- ties wil! have on Canadian business. Conservatives claim they will be beneficial but Liberals say the people of Can- ada will have to pay those duties and trade will be strang- led. Possibly a year from now we shall be in a better posi- tion to tell what the result will be. WHAT IS NEXT STEP? to 38.5’ Q +1 } OCULIAlIU The ports of Montreal and Churchill are closed for the remainder of the grain : shipping season. Ordinarily the shipments would now be made through United States ports but as a result. of the Empire Conference it is less profitable than formerly to ship through the U.S This is the time when Prince Rupert should benefit, but the action of the lessees of the ator in using it for storage pul poses only of as a terminal ship- ping ele it difficult for Prince Rupert to get the benefits which ought to accrue from with of the bie crain shinpine agencies. The contract with the Wheat Pool ends next August and it would seem to be the best Prince Rupert to ask for the « celling of | he Wheat Pool or the insertion of a clause making it oblicatory to ship a reasonable amount of grain through the elevator each year. ‘ local ele instead vator nv ake contact one ; Mad fay policy iol ‘Ls 9 ‘ Lhe iease 10 Cold On Chest Dry, Hacking Cough Mra.
