What Is an MP. Worth?

EVERE criticism-has been levelled at the recent

action of our Members of Parliament in rushing
through and adopting without much murmur a pen-
sion plan for themselves. Among the more out-
spoken in this regard is The Financial Post, which
Says, in part:

“Do MP’s enter Parliament for what they can
get out of it” Some doubtless do. We prefer to give
our regard to those’ who go into the House for what
they can contribute. There are some things money
can’t buy. Surely membership in the House should
not be put on a commercial basis, Certainly this
pension scheme should not and need not be rushed.”

The pension scheme proposes that all members
of pereemen contribute six per cent of their indem-
nity each session until payments reach a maximum
of $4,000. The taxpayer then makes his econtribu-
tion and upon retirement, the MP receives an annua!
pension of $3,000.

“Can any private citizen find such a pleasing
sretirement plan?” asks the Post, and explains that
under the scheme an MP could draw his pension if
he retires from oficfe after 17 sessions—meaning
that if a man is elected at 30, he can leave Parlia-
ment at 47 on full pension.

“The plan takes substantial contributions from
the taxpayers, and will be paid to MP’s regardless
of their need. Doubtless a few members suffer fin-
ancially when they enter Parliament but many of
them also enhance their position by establishing
their names in the public eye.”

The Post also emphasizes the danger of profes-
siohalism entering the parliamentary institution.

The big danger as we see it is, bluntly, more
money for less service in the long run, There are
only a few people out of many in one constituency
who will make a sacrifice of their lives in order to
serve their district in its best interests. When we go
to the polls we choose the one person who we believe
will best serve ovr interests because he has them at
heart.

“When theré is the danger, however, of a can-
didate seeking election not only because he wishes
to serve those whom he is to represent in Parlia-
ment, but also aims at a secure future, we doubt
whether we will have the calibre ‘of men in the run-
ning such as the selfless, hardworking MP’s of the
past,
