Mr. Todd wanted the bell rung when the paper was slipped In behind the storm door. Besides the wishes of the customers to remember Jack had a few of his own observations in mind. Welshes had a dog that was slightly deaf, If aroused suddenly he was likely to test his teeth In the first object in sight which might just as well be the delivery boy's leg as any other thing. Then there was 209 with two planks missing from the front waik and 408 where the children always left their wagons, roller skates, tricyces or other toys scattered on the door step. In the summer such hazards were easy to avoid but in the pitch of a rain-laden winter evening they constituted a threat to Jack's life and limbs and slowed up his delivery. But Jack Hied his route, especially at Christmas. There were tips of course, but best of all he liked the gaiety and Joy people displayed when they greeted him with A Merry Christmas. On this night of niphts most of his customers waited for him and as he left after each exchange of greetings he seemed to carry some -of the happiness with him to the next household. It made the night less dark and the route less long. llF. LOOKS FOR HOME, TOO As Jack dropped his last paper and turned towards home he thought about the welcome he would receive, and appetizing supper that would be waiting for him. The lights would b? sparkling and glowing on the big spruce In the front room, young George and Jean would be arranging presents, mother would be smiling and kidding dad as she always did when she was Ian McRae arrived In the city at the week-end from Vancouver to spend the Christmas season with his father, John McRae. PRINCE RUPERT, B.C. especially happy. Jack wished that Christmas could nappe every day of the year, somehow on this day people were different, happier and friendlier. People called this the Christmas-spirit, and Jack could now understand why adults believed In Santa Claus. To them It wn.s not Just a Jolly old man In a red, fur-trimmed suit who handed out presents or climbed down chimneys to fill waiting stockings at Christmas.
