""PRINCE RUPERT you 11 The chronicle of Assistant Fire Chief Earl Becker and his hand-to-flipper battle with a 160-pound hair seal may serve as an inspiration to young men interested in the conservation of salmon from those wily predators and also as an illustration of how anyone with a gun, a strong pair of arms and a row-boat may earn a casual $5. Earl Isn't particularly anxious ! -ns while it lasted. Besides, he to repeat the epic battle but he has a government bounty vouch-does admit that It was Interest- er for $5 which will be convert- while Earl was rowing in Cloyah Bay this week and shot a hair seal with a .30-30 rifle from a distance of 50 yards. He shot it through the head and rowed out to collect the nose which is worth $5. However, it wasn't quite that simple. He approached the seal and grabbed the creature by its rear flippers, intending to heave it into the boat. The seal, surprisingly energetic, thought otherwise. Then began a classic tug-of-war in which Earl pitted his strength against the seal, meanwhile dodging its sharp teeth with which the seal used to bite chunks out of the gun-whale since it couldn't quite get at the determined fireman. Then it would turn and bite a chunk out of the boat." As man and seal battled it to a finish, the boat drifted to shore, and Earl clambered to the rocks hoping to get his opponent on land. The seal kept pulling him back into the boat until he finally managed to get hold of an oar and beat It about the head. That settled things. "My idea was put a rope about its tall and drag it into the boat but It began to fight before I got the rope attached," Earl said. "It's probably just as well I didn't put the rope on It, or it would have been able to use its hind flippers as well. As it was, I had it at a handicap.
