KSBSi H : New Speed No Discomfort Despite Great Altitude Highlights of Trip MONTREAL The aircraft "Cartier," which has set a new Vancouver-Montreal speed record, is a new pressurized ver-i sion of the "North Star" Mark I which has been flying the At lantic in TCA service since April. "This is the day for which people have been waiting," said Mr Symington. "No more chew-1 ing gum and no more ear-clicking because of altitudes." The pressurization system keeps cab-; in air pressures at a comfortable ievel at all heights. It elimin-I ates any discomfort during ! The flight was made by Trans-I Canada Air Lines Mark II North ; Star, Canadian in conception ltd Canadian built, designed for transcontinental flight over , the Dominion and between Can- j ada and Europe via the North Atlantic route. As of yesterday morning, the ' North Star held three long distance flight records Montreal i to London, 10 hours, 26 minutes; Ireland to Montreal, 12 hours, 40 minutes; Vancouver to Mont- i real, 8 hours, 40 minutes. The last named record was made by the North Star Mark I , plane ; then its successor, the Improved pressurized version, known as the Mark II yesterday made a new Vancouver-Mont-real record of six hours, 52 minutes. On the flight yesterday was also J. T Bain, director of engineering and maintenance, T. C.A., Montreal; Pilot B. A. Raw-son. director of flight develop ment, T.C.A., Winnipeg; Co-PUoU H. W. Seagrim, director of flight, operation, t.c.A., Winnipeg. Mr. Howe and Mr. Symington, 10 years ago, flew on the first dawn to dusk Canadian transcontinental flight, piloted by J.' H. Tudhope, now general mana-1 ger, operation, T.C.A., Winnipeg. The 1937 flight was made in a small 10-seater Electra. It marked, however, the operational beginnings of Trans-Canada Air Lines, which today serves six countries and some 40 cities. HIGHLIGHTS OF FLIGHT Highlights of yesterday's flight were; miles flown, 2,345; speed, 342 miles per hour; altitude, i average i 20,000 feet above sea level. The North Star flew from the Pacific Coast at Vancouver to Lethbridge of the western edge of the prairies, crossing the Rockies enroute, in one hour, 31 minutes. It was over Reglna in two hours, 35 minutes; Winnipeg in three hours, 35 minutes; North Bay, Ont., in six hours flat; Ottawa in six hours, 30 minutes, and landed in Mont-; real in six hours, 52 minutes. Seagrim, veteran flying men on the flight, said it was the realization for them of a lifetime ambition to fly over Canada, including the Rockies, at a speed of a mile for each 10 seconds and sit back in perfect comfort enjoying cigarettes and cigars at 20.000 feet and all this without oxygen masks. Yesterday's record flight was made possible through the lorn; range of the North Star more than 3,000 miles. The aircraft carries 3.000 gallons of gasoline Its magnificent power plant consists of four Rolls-Royce engines each with a horsepower of 1,725 and liquid cooled. It has a pressurized passenger accommodation for 40 passengers and crew of four. No endavour was made to "push" the plane. Its engines were operated at well under the maximum cruising power. It was normal flight for an aircraft of this high standard. The distance flown, 2,435 miles, is the equivalent of the flights these North Stars made each day of the week over the Atlantic and trans -Canada's service between England. Ireland and Scotland. GREETINGS TO MOOSE JAW When approaching Moose Jaw . the Minister of Reconstruction, Mr. Howe, sent by voice radio this message of congratulations to that city on the opening of Moose Jaw's new airport: "As we speed across the prairies at 375 miles an hour in this great Mark II North Star aircraft, I cannot help but be impressed with the great strides we Mtrve made In avition within our Dominion in the last few years. I am sorry that time does not permit me to visit you on this occasion of the opening of your new airport. Mr. Howe received a reply, thanking him warmly and stating that the population of Moose Jaw missed seeing the North Star plane "because it was flying too fast and too high."
