First of all, though, I must not pose as being the one who thought this all out. Actually It Is my understanding of the argument advanced by C. S. Lewis In his book, "The Problem of Pain." When thinking of the animals, we are probably correct In assuming that the ones with the more highly organized nervous systems are the ones with which we are concerned. In other words, those which most nearly resemble the human being. It is fruitless to discuss the immortality of an animal that has not even a rudl-' mentary awareness of Itself. Im mortality, for example, to a lizard would be pointless for. having no self-awareness under any circumstances, he would not know he was the same lizard. It Is those animals which have entered Into close relation ship with us and our famili-lies . . . who seem to us "almost human" . . . whose deaths we mourn often with considerable heartbreak and concerning whom we speculate as to the future life. A friend of mine once said that he didn't want a heaven with no dogs and horses. By this he meant two things, I think. First, there was something in dogs and horses which did satisfy a very deep longing within him. Second, there had been Individual horses and dogs In his life that he would never forget. Now, If we will grant for one I moment that the truly "natural" animal is the domestic animal and not the creature of the wild, we may be able to proceed a little further. It appears from the Scriptures that man, before the Fall, was a kind jot Christ to the animal kingdom and that there was a beautiful relation ship between him and the whole? animal world. One of the consequences of his rebellion against God was the forfeiture of this relationship In the general sense and, Just as we still have some access through Grace to the Divine relationship In spite of our rebellion, so this power to love and be loved by animals has not been totally taken away. It Is significant that most stories of those who live near to God have something to say about the strange adoration which animals and all creatures will bestow upon them. So then, we may perhaps assume that the lives of our animals are wrapped up with our own lives and. In thinking of their immortality, we must think of it as part of our own immortality. If we have hope in Christ concerning our calling into eternity to a life which, while fully in accord with the Divine Life Is not thereby In any danger of losing Identity, but rather the reverse, so we may further hope that our beloved friends of the animal kingdom have the same hope in us that we have in Christ . . . that they may be part of our Immortality even as we are part of Christ's Holiday visitors from here to Lakelse Lake recently have Included Mr. and Mrs. J.
