They are, members of the Long Bland Auto Racing society Which meets regularly at East Meadow, L.I., N.Y. The box In the photo over the track Is an electric eye which clocks the cars in hundredths of seconds. The national record for one of these little fireballs of the speedway is 120.32 m.p.h. on a l-24th mile trak. REPOHTORIAL hVF.iil KNCES j - (W. J. R.) There used to be a time when the typewriter was not in general use in some newspaper offices and such omission was a short-sistoed policy. From the standpoint of economy It was not justified. It bred loss of time, watte of effort, vexaltion of soul, all round .perplexity and, in short, plenty of grief. A shming, spotless, glossy locking "mill" was hardly to be ttioufht of for each- member of th writing staff. Such contraptions cost real money. It might be all rfgWt for the New York Times but not for the "Bing-ville Bugle." At least, not Just yet. It would not have been quite so distressing had a measure or chart ty gone with the judgment behind the distribution of lead pencils. As a rule, each pencil had two defects. Lead would be- too hard and there was no rubber. Alas! and likewise, Alackl One's own handwriting Is familiar enough to the perpetrator, who wovld sit himself dewn and whittle away a)!xt one-quarter of the pencil, in the process of .achieving a fine point. Like as not before 50 words had been committed to posterity, the fine point had penetrated the paper, at least twice per paragraph. Take things, by and large, it seemed a certainty that the lines were destined to make hard reading for somebody else. The getrtle art of composltlo went on. To many erasures tear paper. It only hsips make a mess of things. And so, with time's Announcements All adrertlsemenu m this column Till be charged tor a lull at 2Se word. Presbyterian Tea, Mrs. W. D. A sort of uneasy silence, disturbed only by the subdued clicking of ther machines. To converse with ones' self, sometimes, Is not an uncommon practice. One's feelings, under certain conditions can be relieved, perhaps. This time there was reason. "Something has been scored out, right there, and not rewritten. Now what's that? (A long pause) Looks like paint, but can't be that. (Another rustling of the pages and a sigh). "Here's a beauty. Is It pigeon or puncheon?" And so on and so on until further patience snapped. The pencils were thrown out and the typewriters moved in. THIS AND THAT 1 GYM j'1 "Haikins, I know you've been with us a long time, but you'll ., have to do something about your figure!"
